Why are we not allowed to defend ourselves in our own homes?

grffindoor2011, your examples are ridiculous.
So you disable them, how do you know youve disabled them please explain disable ?
How do you know whilst you go to the phone to call the police or whatever, one or more of them isnt pulling out a gun or knife and isnt then going to get up and attack you or a family members, but this time with a weapon that you up until now havent seen.

what are you going to do to disable them this time ?
there seems to be some very strong feelings on both sides, all we know is from the media. 4 men alledgely broke into a home, 2 men had non life threatening injuries from a shotgun, let the cps draw their own conclusions.
What if you came downstairs at 2am, the light was on and a man in a wheelchair and two little girls were ransacking your drawers. Would you shoot them, whether or not they had a knife etc?

I think many on here agree with the defending part as I do. It should not mean though that you kill someone because they may do something to you.

As for those idiots in Melton Mowbray, maybe they should have defended themselves with pork pies.

Are you for real or taking the p***?

To answer the question, yes they need to be arrested, the truth found out and if simply defending themselves no more of the matter.

I am trying to think why some think it has to be a split second decision. You are woken in the night, you hear lots of movement (four men would not be quiet). Of course you are going to get the gun, if anything to wave at them menacingly. If however they ignore that then pop them in the legs, as this person did.
He/she has to be taking the p|ss.
"yes they need to be arrested"

they dont need to be arrested , why cant they be questioned under caution ?
baz ,a valid point, the arrest does appear ott whilst enquiries are still going on.
" If however they ignore that then pop them in the legs, as this person did. "

maybe the leg shot was lucky, maybe hes a bad shot and aimed at their upper bodies.

Shotguns arent known for their accuracy.

what if whilst lying on the ground or hopping around with pellets in their legs they get out a gun or a knife, then what are you going to do.

Bearing in mind if its a double barreled or single shotgun and youve already let off all barrels you will need to reload, unless of course its a pump action or repeater of some kind !

Arnie would know what to do !
If someone is armed and has broken into your house you're essentially stuffed, but if I let go two well aimed shots in an average sized kitchen aimed at the leg area then unless they are armed it's unlikely they are going to argue. If they have a gun, you're already in trouble, but you do have to moderate your behaviour dependant how serious you believe the threat to be.
If I found 4 men in my house at 2am I'd wonder how come they hadnt set the claymores off.
The fact is that this family were in their own home minding their own business and these men break in and through no fault of his own the householder is thrown head first into a difficult situation. Does he protect his family, of course he does! I think he'll get off and I hope he does.
I don't actually know why grffindoor2011 is talking about shooting to kill. These intruders haven't been killed.
Break into someones house and you need to face the consequences, whatever they may be

Seriously, what do some people expect folk to do when they find scum burgling their property? Offer them tea and biscuits maybe?
My dad always made sure that my mother and I knew where the keys to the cabinet were kept ;)

Still, I wouldn't just aim and fire at will. I would only shoot if it was my honestly held belief that I was in mortal danger.
"Shotguns aren't known for their accuracy"

Oh I don't know...I've dusted a few Clays in my time... :-)
BBC just confirmed that the couple will not be facing charges....
Good! Justice, for them, has been done.
