Why are we not allowed to defend ourselves in our own homes?

We are allowed to defend ourselves but you can't expect to shoot people and not be arrested.
Actually, I don't care what happens to burglars. They make their choice and they take their chance.
Well hopefully they won't be prosecuted. They still need to be arrested though.
I haven't got a gun but if I did and I was placed in the same position I would definitely fire it at the intruders. I agree with Naomi - if they decide to do the crime they should take any consequences. The householders should be given a medal not charged with a crime.
They haven't been charged have they?

Again, you can't shoot someone and not be arrested for questioning. Were the police suppose to take their word for it?
Would the people who have been shot have grounds for an action in the civil courts? Unreasonable force used against them?
If four men invade your house, I think shooting them is reasonable force.

What else could be done to repel them?
This incident happened very near to where I live, its not usually a place where this kind of thing happens! I totally agree with Naomi ........... its the burglars who should be prosecuted not the home owners.
No-one should be shot on sight.
What if I was running away from someone and my only escape was your house?
Presumably Lazarus was actually there and knows 100% it wasn't something like.... oh... maybe a game of poker that got out of hand so the guy shot the other players.

If it turns out to be what it seems at face value (a homeowner pulled a shotgun on three men breaking into his house in the dead of night) then I fully support his actions and hope he is released... but until that is proven he does need to be arrested and questioned.
No one is arguing that but are you suggesting that the homeowners shouldn't be arrested and questioned? Are the police suppose to accept their version of events?
Ummm - apparently the home owners rang the police to tell them there was a gang breaking in .............
People who steal from houses need to know that they are not going to be let off lightly!
After he had fired shots.

The police can't just take someones word for it.

If the story is correct then I hope that the homeowners are not prosecuted.
Ann.... I repeat to you, were you there to witness the incident? or are you taking what you read in the news as being gospel?

Of course it needs to be investigated, so all parties need to be arrested for questioning.
So Ann if someone tries to steal your accumulated stuff it's OK to murder them right?
What would you do if somebody broke into your home in the middle of the night, mojo?.... offer them a cuppa?
I'd shoot them.
No not me LOL - I wouldn't fire at them, I would just run for it ...................
I'd shoot anyone breaking into my home too.
