Me and my husband will both be 55 in 2011 and we've decided to get fit and lose some weight together. We've set, what we consider to be, sensible targets for weight and general fitness but, sensibly, how fast should a middle-aged man or woman expect to run a mile?
Possibly the reason, Bednobs is that people sensed that the question as it stood was fatuous and were trying to help. No two 55 year olds start from the same base. Therefore a numerical answer is not much help for someone starting out.
im 36 and the only exercise i get is walking round car boot sales in the summer.... but ive just bought a tread mill which i walk fast on an incline to get my cardio working and then try and do a light jog for 1 min and very fast walk a min then jog....im hoping to increases my jog time as i get fitter then maybe in summer be able to jog for a mile or 2..... do you think this is the way to do it and will i lose a few pounds and change my shape a little??
lizzie-the kind of answers received will always vary according to the sort of question asked-some require factual answers, while any like yours do not. There is not a definite answer to your question as there are too many variables like your age, level of fitness, and whether you have even ever run before. Please try to accept graciously any advice being given-particularly if from those more experienced.
pastafreak, - what a good answer and you're right.
People on here are your friends too lizzie they want to help you hence the advice. The answer is there but its you who have to work it out.
I hope you reach your goal & take it steady.

Thanks Jem......it is outside of CB that it is so apparent that there is a wealth of not just knowledge but very useful advice on AB...it's great that so many are so giving of their own experience.
I think 10 mins is too quick for a mile if you haven't run before. I use the running machine at the gym and run at 7.5 kph (4.6 mph) or 8kph (5 mph) and take about 12 mins for a mile. I can't pace myself running outside and prefer to use the machine.
