if he is found guilty, and does not appeal and have the verdict overturned it is further justification for the life should mean life without parole and that sentence applied to all murders where there are no mitigating circumstances or in the case of multiple offences. If he is guilty then he remains a danger to others

but and I am in the realms of wild theory here perhaps he has one benefit to society though...he and those like him are widely studied and we may learn fron the actions of such individuals and maybe one day we will develop effective methods of treating such people so they don't /can't re-offend or better still we can identify potential offenders so they never cause harm Until then we have only imprisonment to protect society.
They/He SHOULD have been PROPERLY punished in the first place, and then the little sh1t wouldn't have been out to access porn etc. All this giving them games and special treatment - I've known kids in orphanages not have a 1/4 of what those two evil wastes of space had while being so-called punished for what they did to little Jamie

well that got some good responses, i was surprised there wasn't someone saying how he deserves a 2nd chance, and then a 3rd etc etc, and it isn't his fault, but most people have their heads screwed on.

one thing that always amuses me, is how if you want people like this to be ececuted, you are automatically deemed right wing, and i don't agree with this.
beastmonkey - I am pretty sure that history tells us that the tendency for kneejerk reaction based on equal measures of emotional ill-considered response combined with an unassailable sense of self-righteousness is pretty much exclusively the preserve of the political right.

By definition, the left are motivated by the best for their fellow men, and this tends to include not handing individuals over to fascist lynch mobs for any crime, from child murder to speaking loudly in libraries.

if that is true though, surely then so many people wouldn't have perished under the communist party or the khmer rouge, as i don't think these were right leaning
It is strictly a generalisation in terms of attitude, rather than a concrete political doctrine.

The simple fact is, human beings of any political persuasion rarely use power to give themselves less of anything, including a proportionately increasing belief that they are correct, and anyone who disagrees is, at best, someone to be ignored, and at worst, someone to be elminiated.

Margaret Thatcher was famously renowned for her ability to comprehend opposition, but not dissent. Fortunately, we don't do 'disappearing' of people with whom the government does not agree ... yet.
I don't think the communists or the khmer rouge are a good example of left-wing politics any more than the nazis were a good example of right-wing politics, I'm sure andy hughes was referring to politics in the context of free society, not brutal dictatorships. Re Venables and cases of this ilk it's far too easy to invoke 'evil' as it means we don't have to think about why a child would do this, or even to think about the possibility they didn't fully comprehend what they were doing. I know I'll be flamed for even suggesting that and condemned as a bleeding-heart leftie etc. But anyway, while some of us don't make automatic assumptions of guilt, or call for people to be killed, I'd be surprised if anyone had come in here to 'defend' him
A fair point well made joolee.

It is far to easy to simply rage with hate and vengence, it means people don;t have to think about the sheer tragedy for all those involved in this terrible business.

John Venables has been a seriously damaged child, and he has grown into a damaged adult. Some compassion may go some way towards helping people like him, instead of looking for the gratification of ugly violent pointless revenge.

And yes, of course my compassion goes out a million times more to poor Jamie and his family, but we cannot change the past, only the future.
