Just as an afterthought, devil, you could maybe make a donation to his favourite charity or plant a push in his memory. Or you could invite all your mutual friends round and having a celebratory evening of food and drinks in his honour - sort of have your own wake where you play his favourite music, etc - and you don't have to invite his family because it's YOUR shindig ! I'm sure he'll smile down on you. :-)
I think you did the right thing not going. As others have said, you can pay your own respects where and when you want to, in the company of who you want with you.
If you had gone and it all turned ugly then that would've been in your head, rather than it being a celebration [or however you see a funeral] your ex's life. It would've overshadowed the main purpose of the funeral.
