Before Christmas, I had a cold call from a burglar alarm company asking if I would be interested in buying a new, comprehensive alarm system for my property.

Duuh, helloo !!

Do they seriously think I'm going to discuss any details of my alarm system with a stranger, on the phone ?

I told them that I already had the most comprehensive alarm system available, with a redcare link to the Police, alarms on all the windows, and in every room, with "step pads" under the floor, and CCTV inside the flat and on the outside wall, linked to a hard drive recorder.

Which, of course ... I do !

I didn't mention the poison darts and other booby traps hidden around the place.

And no ... it's never gone off.

(which may mean it just doesn't work, LOL)
best alarm get a dog !!
It worked for David Beckham !
A neighbour called me out of work when my alarm was ringing. I raced home full of trepidation. A leaf had fallen off my rubber plant and set it off. So yes they do go off at times.
When my parents alarm went off, the alarm maintenance man said it might have been an insect walking on the motion sensor !

^^^^They're the sort of things that worry me about keeping the alarm (we've moved into a bungalow with one already fitted).

In our old house, the alarm went off one night for no apparent reason. Frightened the life out of us.

I was once told that a true professional burglar could by-pass most alarm systems, and having an alarm could actually work against you instead of going in your favour. I guess there is no cut-and-dried answer to that.

Thanks for replies all. xxx
The police who were visiting my neighbours after her second burglary (and has an alarm) told me I had the best alarm system, our dog. Our neighbours alarm goes off on a regular basis, usually it's due to spiders in the vicinity apparently. Anyway, it's a nuisance. I always trot round to see if everything is OK though because our neighbours are very elderly.
Morning Mrs. C. - In my old house we had an alarm that had sensors in every room - the downside of that is we had to turn off the ones on the landing, as when we got up in the night to have a wee, the alarm went off.

We now live in a bungalow and Mr. Den installed a solar power alarm which has sensors on the doors and windows and not inside - much better.

I feel much safer knowing this is on at night when we are asleep.
yes and fingered crossed no it hasnt, would freak me out either way
I had a system fitted by ADT.. and the alarm would regularly go off... set off by our cats mostly - despite being sold a pet friendly system!
I even got the call from their centre to say the alarm was going off - and when I got home it wasnt!
I was furious with the system - it freaked out my poor cats... and so I stopped using it.
ADT eventually admitted the system was not fit for purpose and offered to fit a new one in our new house... I never took them up on it - but was pleased they admitted fault.
Waste of time, who ever takes notice of a burglar alarm going off? Unless its wired directly to the police or security firm, no point.
We had the senser in the hall misaligned, and the paper coming through the letterbox set it off - easily fixed.

Sometime spiders walk over the sensers and that can set alarms off.
