From the perspective of the relatively new poster that I am, I've seen similarities to the above.
Not so much in the daily hot topics/questions, I mean within the obvious community that has
established itself here and ticks over all the time occasionally denying that they are a 'clique'.
I see what people describe as "trolls" coming and going, I assume they are former posters who have slipped up, got themselves banned then gone all out to create new personas using different e-mail addresses so they can come in and finish where they left off.
I also see interactions that go on between folks that seem as though they have found their safe crowd
and are not particularly interested in newcomers.
I see VERY different political ideals being slugged out, each person hoping to get their point across.
I've had a go, coming in with my own -often haphazard, often mis-read interpretations of what's going on. The rest of the time I observe the comings and goings, sometimes fascinated, sometimes irritated, sometimes mystified at what a melting pot this place seems to be.
What a melting pot ALL internet forums are - take a bunch of ordinary everyday people from all walks of life and bung em in the same room and see what happens, in my experience it balances out somehow; pleasantries are exchanged, body language is understood and everyone finds their comfort zone.
Now take the same bunch of folks and shove them in a 'virtual' room and see what happens - something VERY different, we are all safe behind our monitors "somewhere". We all have
pseudonyms, so we are free and 'safe' to express our true feelings
well at least the feelings the moderators allow us to express.
So what happens?
Sorry, a bit tired and drunk now -what was the name of that book?
Ah yes ......
So who is holding the conch? :-)
Nighty night.

//In time all that will remain on this site is a few smug, infirm housebound, spiteful OAP's with nothing better to do than cyber slapping each other on the back.//
You have forgotten the bored housewives who's kids are at school and the bored women who have got crap jobs and at around 5p.m the women with large "chips on their shoulders"
I'm not housebound, a housewife, bored, sick of my job, home from work at 5pm, not got a chip on my shoulder, not got kids at school, not lonely nor grumpy, not in a clique............why am i even here????
Interesting post MM but I'm not sure I really see that much similarity with Lord of the Flies though. I thought the core idea of that was civilised children descending into savagery once the rules were no longer reinforced.
Hmm, actually I do see where your coming from especially re the anononymity. Personally I'm not that bothered whether people know who I am and if we ever have a mass coming outta the closet I'm up for for it.
I wouldn't really say AB had cliques just groups of people who are especially friendly, usually the women but not exclusively, or maybe I've just been lucky and never experienced a group savaging.
As chakka says, R&S is where it gets really heavy but it's every man for themselves in there.
