vw golf 1800i 1990 will start then switch it off then try again and it ticks from the starter but have a new starter put on it

Bad connection either on solonid or the starter.

also check battery leads are clean and have good contacts,both ends.

Sounds a good plan to look for a bad connection, a hot engine has higher compression so the load on the starter is greater when the engine has been running.
