We had a van with 2 years NCD on it. Sold it and bought a new van and insured it with the same company. It is due for renewal and the renewal notice says 1 year NCD. When i asked if they transferred NCD's to a change in vehicle i was told probably yes, but not sure. She went away to ask and came back and said no they don't transfer, but they would give me a discount equivalent to the NCD. Can they do this? What happens next year when we should have 4 years NCD? I have tried other insurance companies who are dearer but they would give me three years NCD regardless.

I don't get this question - no claims bonus accrues irrespective of the car you drive providing you've made no claims. Well it does for me anyway, and I've been driving over 30 years!.
The NCD belongs to the person insured, not the vehicle! :oS

Thanks for the quick reply but does it mean that they have to give it to us? Is it law? Sorry if i sound thick but i have no idea how this works, neither does my husband!

We have a car which also has a full NCD against it. Does this make a difference? They do know this too.
If you are in the UK, I should imagine yes - you haven't claimed therefore you should get it for not claiming. If you go to another insurer, you will be asked about this and they can all check, so all should work on the same info.
are you sure you have not had any accident at all in the last few yrs, whether your fault or not,as even if it was not your fault it would reflect in your no claims bonus yrs.if not then kick up a stink and threaten tomove to a new insurer

Normanthedog: We did have a claim in early 2004. Insurance company fully aware of this and we had worked up a 2 year NCD on the old van. We have had the new van 12 months so our NCD should be 3 years but they are only allowing 1. My assumption is that if they admit to the extra 2 years then they would owe me for last year as they obviously did not take the NCD into account. (I didn't check this................)
Do you have another vehicle on which you are getting the NCD? Most insurers won't give you the same NCD on an additional vehicle.
Or perhaps you had a claim and therefore at renewal/change the NCD reduces?
Of course this may be a good time to shop around for a better deal- find someone who will give the full NCD
it seems to me you have lost the 2 yrs for that claim.

Normanthedog: Why did they give it to me for the old van. There was no dispute with that. We had two years on that. The problem is that they have not carried it forward to the new van. We have had no claims in the three years we have been insured with this company.
As has been said, NCD relates to absence of claim, not to a particular vehicle. I recently changed my car & the full NCD was automatically transferred to it from the old one.

It sounds to me like they made a mistake when you insured the new van and are trying to get out of it. They have to have a complaints procedure (& an independent ombudsman or the like). Details should be on your policy. Write a formal complaint & see what happens.
