Of course, in a "normal" pub you might not hear someone's phone, but in a "quiet" pub then you would: so from that point of view I can understand it. As long as we have the choice to go somewhere where we can do as we please (within reason) then why not? I

16.40 it must be a spanish thing, i was on holiday in Fuengirola last year, and had a similar experience to you. Whilst we were watching a girl singing in a hotel entertainment room, this woman at the bar pulled her phone out and started playing some very loud souless music!! and ignored pleas to turn it off until a burly barman turned up changed her mind!!

I know of a number of pubs with no slot machines, no tvs,  mostly of the specialist real ale variety,   patrons are asked to put phones on silent and best of all no under 16s allowed at all!   Which means adults can speak without worrying about younger ears  hearing.... No toddlers and preschoolers running around or throwing tantrums... Bliss
