hi, don't know if this is the right place, for about six months now been looking for an explanation. normally a sound loving wife and mother, but when the full moon is about turn into some kind of... well don't know what? not like in the cartoons, don't grow excessive hair or howl at the moon, but dip into a terrible depression i suppose, my mood is totally altered i become hateful and aggresive and sometimes feel suicidal. these last few months, been charting when the behaviour occurs and it is always a full moon. i am looking for some kind of explantion or help as i have little of either. i have only just recently found out that my paternal grandfather had suffered from a similar " condition ". i also have the most vivid dreams when the moon is full which don't normally occur. i'm not some kind of loon, don't think so, did go and see my GP who wanted to put me on prozac and did not consider that my problem revolved around the moon or my mentrual cycle or anything inparticular. i'm afraid that my behaviour may worsen so i'm looking for advice and help.

I am blessed not to have faced what you are facing, valehouse. So sorry to hear it.

I found this on the net:

You mention not having interest in drugs, and I can understand that. Perhaps there are alternatives, such as avoiding certain foods or alcohol. I really do not know. But I do know, for example, that sugar ramps me up then I come off that sugar high and get kind of depressed, and that alcohol also causes me to feel depressed a little. Perhaps you can discover some of the things that do this to you and avoid them, and perhaps you can counter balance some of the depression with certain activities during those times. For example, turn the lamps a bit brigher on those nights, play some relaxing music, avoid depressing television shows, or even go to a place that is fun and upbeat. There must be some natural solutions.

So sorry, again. :( I'd buy you a pint to cheer you up if you were a bloke.

it's not related to your cycle is it, that would kinda coincide with a full moon if you were a regular 28 days, it could be coinciding with the whole jolly PMT part of your cycle.

There are lots of of herbal remedies out there too if you knew what you were trying to remedy.

However, if I were you I would nip along to see your gp. I have decided to make an appointment with mine just today (gotta wait a million years tho :-( as I too have been feeling really high one minute and then really low the next. I have alwasy been a bit like this, but for some reason the highs and lows seem to be greater now than ever and Im sick of never knowing how Im gonna feel.

Probably GP will think Im a weirdo. Maybe Ill go with the full moon theory to make me sound less like a weirdo....

Hope you feel better soon, honey.

Lots of people notice feeling weird around the time of a full moon. Don't expect the Doctor to accept this as a reason!! And don't take prozac!! If you think: our bodies are made up of mainly water. And the moon has a massive influence on the tides- so just think what it does to our bodies. Not to mention our cycles.

I agree that it could well be linked to hormones too. You could try evening primrose oil?

Hi Valehouse,
The word lunatic comes from a french root .
It was made to refer to people who went mad when the moon was full.
The theory goes like this.
The moon has a strong magnetic pul on the tides of the earth. . If it is strong enough to effect the tides, which are made of water, then it also must effect us too because we are mostly made of water.
We are also electrical beings and the lunar pull effects our whole bodies.
Each person reacts differently as we all have a different of electricity in our bodies. Why do some people get electric shocks from cars and metal fitting in shops?
some believe the moon runs our l9ives, many tribes and cultures still do and who are we to disagree. the western culture to which we cling is very superficial.

Every full moon has a negative effect on my ex wife who is a depressive psychotic , and also my second son.
I feel wide awake and feel it gives me energy.

In our culture many say that people who are more susceptable to mental illness are more sensitive to the lunar phases.
In a lot of cultures you are thought stupid or less of a human being if you ignore the effect of the moon.
.
It also efects the amount of physical violence. The number of women fleeing violence from their partners increases considerably and do assaults on the street during a full moon.

part two
Your doctor may have been in the railway station but on the wrong track. But then he is only a general Practitioner.
Prozac effects the seratonin levels. It can help some people but it also causes problems for 25% of users.
I think he is treating your depression

I would suggest you ask to be referred to a psychiatrist, if you are so concerned and if you are feeling suicidal it is important you are able to understand why you feel this way.

If it gets too much you can admit yourself into a mental health unit, you can ring the out of hours emergency on call doctor who will call an oncall psycjiatrist to come and assess you. they can then admit you for assessment in a hosptial.
it is nothing that can't be treated and allow you to lead a full life. one in three people have mental health problems in their lives , the problem comes when we decide to ignore the signs.
Try to see another doctor soon
If you are feeling really bad call the out of hours service.
You can talk to mental health charities.

take care and let me know what happens

i would just like to thank everyone who answered my question, i really didn't expect it. nice to know that there are people out there who are willing to give a little of their time and knowledge. thankyou.

funnily enough I get these feelings at the new moon!

i was born on the day of the new moon so maybe thats why.

but i know a few people who act strangely at full moon. I have one friend who I now refuse to see at full moon - and he agrees because he is insufferable.

fortunately it only lasts for about 3 days - day before, on and day after.
