I've got a 'special' birthday coming up in November, and I would like to invite a few people for nibbles and a couple of drinks but I don't want to send invites that say 'party' because it won't be a party as such, what can I put on the invites so people don't think it's going to be a big party atmosphere. tia

Also how far in advance should I send out the invites?
3 weeks in advance and head it up as drinks and nibbles or an invite to drinkie poos!
Without knowing the folk you're sending them to I suggest something like a 'get together' or a gathering to celebrate.. etc.
How about, You are invited to our soiree, which is an elegant evening gathering.
Fruit salad I would send invites well in advance just saying you would love your friends to come round for drinks and do some easy food. M & S do party food selections

I'm not sure it will be elegant sapelesam, but some good ideas, thank you.
It's often easier to explain things verbally than in writing. For example, you could say to your friends (right now) something like this:
"Since I'll be twiddley-umpty-five on the umpteenth of November, I'm planning on inviting a few friends round on that evening for a few drinks and snacks. It won't be a proper 'party' but it would help to make my day if you could come along. So please keep that date free in your diary, if possible"

Then later, if you stil want to put something in writing, you can send out cards (or emails) headed "A Reminder" and adding something like "I'll be as old as the hills on the umpteenth of November and I'm hoping that you've not forgotten that I'll be opening a few bottles, and providing a few snacks, at my place that evening (from 7.00pm until about 9-ish). I do hope that you'll be able to join me".
soiree, I've never heard that word before... I like it. be shock though if Margo Leadbetter turns up.
Didn't Hyacinth Bucket have candlelit suppers?
Or Hyacinth Bucket, Arky ;-)
Yes she did, maggie.
"come around for a fun, informal evening, inc. some drinks and nibbles...."
Maggie thought Mrs Bouquet only had dinner parties
and afternoon tea....

Just say a few of us guys are having a bit of a do ,when you come round with my present you can have a cuppa Tay .Rsvp as I don't want to ruin the tea bag .
OH is 80 next month. I'm doing a bit of a do for him.
I've told folk he is having a birthday bash.
^^^ So Caran, and her OH, are having a 'bit of a do'.

What could possibly go wrong?

;-)
Chris I dread to think!
Book a little surprise for him, Caran ;-)

I think a get-together would be a good way to put it.
