On another web site I have been trying to give examples of words / phrases that have a different meaning in the USA from the one they have here.
I have given a few , eg the expression 'To knock up' a person has a totally different meaning in the USA.
Petrol = gas . Sweets = Candy. Power cut = power outage Bum = Tramp

According Bryson, its us that have changed, not them.
He reckons that all our English words were taken to American in the 16th Century and most of them stayed, but its us that don't use some of them anymore.
