A book is the original concept, the truth if you will. Any film based on a book is an interpretation and by default strays from the truth. So, a book's merit should not be diminished by a screen adaptation.

No film can be better than a book in terms of accuracy or the author's will where the book was written first,as it is not possible to construct an exact replica of the genuine article.
The Physician, one of my all time favourite books. The film was rubbish
The Exorcist.
I hate it when they change the ending, I went to see Billy Elliott at the Palace Theatre in Manchester last week and they changed the ending to that and as much as I enjoyed it, I was disappointed that the ending wasn't the same as the film ...
Witness For The Prosecution- the film remake was dire.
What I don't understand is, the book must have been good in the first place to be considered for a film. If it was so good why do they rewrite it to such an extent that the only thing remaining of the original story is the title.
There are things in print that cannot realistically be reproduced on film.
