I went out earlier to pick up a dead dove which was lying on the lawn with wings outspread.

Its eyes were still open. I would have felt better about putting it in the bin if its eyes had been closed. Why did its eyes not close?

If you are getting high numbers of dead birds in the garden, you could seek advice from DEFRA.
The telephone number for England and Wales is : 08459 335577.

You are not going to believe this but I found another one just now.
Perhaps they just 'dove' in the ground...
Then you must take Chip's advice, Tilly.......that's unusual........Have you asked any neighbours if they've found any.......x
We are seeing many dead and dieing woodpigeons on Son's estate, the old timers blame 'beech mast disease' (whatever that is) that comes from eating too much mast.
Question Author
All the neighbours are out at work, Gness. I'll ring Defra though.

'Dying' even....

I'm on hold.........
Hold on...
Question Author
I've given up.
Are there are young louts around your area with an air-rifle? If it was on the lawn with the wings spread out it probably died instantly.
Question Author
There are no marks or blood on any of the birds, Wildwood. They haven't been shot. Thanks for the suggestion, though. x
If you've had no joy with DEFRA try RSPB, Tilly.....x
Question Author
I'll try DEFRA again later this afternoon, Gness. I think I may have called at lunch time yesterday :-)

Failing that, I'll ring the Sandy Headquarters.

No dead birds today, so far.
Question Author
Couldn't get through to DEFRA again! Honestly. What is the point of a helpline if there's no one there to help!
Mmmm.....mentioned it to a relative who was quite scathing about DEFRA and she said RSPB would be much better......x
Question Author
I ran out of time to ring RSPB. I'll do that tomorrow. x
If you can't get through to the help-line, then maybe they will respond to an email.
Hope you don't get anymore dead birds, I'm quickly running out of food on these frosty mornings!
