Hi

I'm part of a sales team and my manager has recently started checking on my whereabouts - no-one else in the team has been asked to detail where they are at any given time, so effectively being "targetted" really. (By the way, no reason to do this, no performance issues, prior issues/warnings, and I have been with the company c10+ years and am doing well).

The role involves being out seeing clients and we update the office Outlook diary.

Is this sort of thing allowed? Wouldn't have an issue with it if everyone was being looked at. (BTW...manager says, "everyone is being monitored"; fact is, they aren't).

Thanks,

Jealousy maybe? "They are all being Monitored" can you prove otherwise?

Only from asking fellow team members, and none of them are being asked the same question!
Have you given him any reason to monitor your performance?
Perhaps you're just the first to be monitored.
Act innocent but take notes / Dates / times yourself, after a month or so ask your Manager how you are doing then ask your work mates the same.
Baseline is that an employer is entitled to know where you are and what you are doing during work time. They can choose to ask one member of staff at a time or some or all. Manager was a bit silly to tell you that everyone is being monitored if they aren’t though and it has to be done politely. If you like your job and want to keep it, then tell the manager what they want to know and just get on with the job.
Ask for their reasons in writing. Nicely of course.

Thanks to all for your time and answers. Will make notes as I go and keep my head down...
I'm with Tilly on this, I think you are just the first and the rest will get their turn.Let's face it they can hardly monitor everyone at once!
A place I worked had that scheme it was called an appraisal , when it was your turn to be appraised they checked everything you did. But all employees had their appraisal dates.

Yes, we have appraisals as well...this latest thing has come out of the blue....
I worked in a place (cheque clearing) and we had to log on and off every time we left our desk.

Our computers would turn off after an 1 minute idle and we'd have to write down what time we left our desk, the reason why and what time we returned...

Someone was employed to monitor them sheets...along with every key stroke we made.
