Depends partly on where you are bringing them back to - I assume the UK?  US Customs will only really be interested in drugs, but if you were carrying a significant quantity they would let you go and UK Customs would take over.

UK Customs would (in principle) be interested in any purchases over your duty free allowance (alcohol, tobacco, perfume) or over your personal allowance (lost track, but about 160-180 sterling per person  eg clothes, presents)

What do you want to bring back?

food mainly. twinkies :)  i'm guessing that package food is ok, but not fresh stuff?

Your problem won't be with the departure from JFK, but with the arrival back in the UK.  Common sense needs to prevail, but your own government should be consulted for what is allowed to be imported from U.S. But in the mean time, check this site for advice on coming into the U.S.

BTW, welcome!
