what a versatile word it is

it is easy to understand UP, meaning towards the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning - why do we wake UP?

at a meeting, why does a topic come UP?

why do we speak UP, and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report?

we call UP our friends

we can brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen

we lock UP the house and fix UP the old car

people stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite and think UP excuses

to be dressed is one thing - but to be dressed UP is special

a drain must be opened UP because it's blocked UP

a shop is opened UP in the morning, then closed UP in the evening

when rain threatens, we say it is clouding UP
when the sun comes back out things dry UP

i could continue, but my time is UP, so i shall wrap this post UP - and shut UP

i figured you would come UP with that one, cupid
and we say - I'm going up the road.

When I was little, people used to say they were going "up to town" when they meant they were going to London - it didn't matter whether they lived North or South of the city, it was always "up"

What I don't understand is the American - is Uptown or Downtown the posh part?
Downtown, Boxy, is where the lights are so pretty etc :-)

Uptown is suburbia.
Thanks alba - IMO the word Uptown sounds more exciting!
I give UP

that's because you are an uptown girl, boxtops
our lovely JJ goes uptown to Ponkytown (London) every so often.

I think Essex and Kent beat it hands-down (as does Cambridgeshire, Notts and Leics and Glos and Norn Iron and Eire and you get the picture!) ☺
Here in the U.S. an industrious farmer can cut down a tree for firewood, but before it's useable the tree has to be then cut up… unique concept!
Completely fed up!
