I have had one of the above added to my PC for some time or so I thought.I tried to access the contents but the PC doesn't recognise it.Any ideas please?

USB? Remove it, reboot the PC, insert it into a different USB port. If that doesn't work, there are other suggestions.

That was quick DG. I tried your suggestion but still no go.A note came up "trouble with short cut" Thanks.
Yes, but can you actually see the drive's contents in Windows Explorer?
If you're getting the diagnostic "Trouble with shortcut" it implies you're not accessing the drive directly but using a shortcut set up some time ago which isn't working. Look in "computer" and you should be able to see the drive there.
I'm betting that the device has acquired a different drive letter due to another device being connected as the machine rebooted and taking priority.

Here comes a grovelling apology...sorry.I have a multi power point board for my PC and other attach,s Sometimes I have to remove a plug to accomodate another this time it was the hard drive one and it was not replaced for how long I don't know.Hence no recognition of the unit.SORRY !!!Getting back to why I wanted to view the folders, only to find that they are in zip form,Not a folder with the zip.How do you open them using Vista? A bit long winded but thanks.

Thanks fender I haven't done that yet. I've opened up folders from 2014 to 2017 and the same page of photos are shown. What the hell is going on?? Please help.
