Is everything still in iTunes on your computer...?

only things that I have purchased or downloaded

If you purchase it or downloaded, than may be saved in your computer or iTunes.
So try the following steps :
First Connect the iPod to your computer using the iPod USB cable. The computer automatically detects the iPod and iTunes loads on the computer.
Now Click on the iPod in the Device section of iTunes. Click on the Summary tab in the list of options that expands. Click Restore to open a configuration dialog box.
Click Don't Back Up in the first dialog box and Click Restore in the next dialog box and Click OK after the restoration of your files completes.
Now Click Eject button next to the iPod icon in the iTunes panel. ITunes returns a message that you can remove your iPod from the computer safely.
To prevent it from happening again you can copy everything on your ipod back to your computer into a folder called "Ipod". Later, when updating the songs on your ipod (deleting some and/or adding some), do the same with the songs in the Ipod folder to keep it up to date.
