iPhone upgrade help

I've recently updated my iphone to the new 4s but I forgot to back up my old phone so now I've lost everything. Anyone know how to get back my music from itunes that I had downloaded?

Have you tried searching on your computer for a file that could contain some of you music (try a search for some artists/song names)?

I lost all music when I upgraded (and photos), even though it'd seemed to do the back up, never found either.
