Zeb is right - one thing I'd add though is ... if you know when the disruptions are due .... unplug all your equipment - (you could also apply this precaution to TVs and the like) - include printers and router
most electrical equipment has a standby mode and in standby the equipment is still on (on the pc the mobo never looses power to allow for wake on lan (wol) and standby.
when the power grid is taken down ... the substation transformers "empty" and when re-powered can cause a momentery surge of many hundreds (sometimes thousands) of volts. Pysical switches normally aren't affected .... but electronic switches can easily be fried
