Is setting up a desktop PC as easy as a laptop?
Need to get a new one ,as the present one is not Wireless Enabled and am using Ethernet Network Adapter with it but my son is not happy with this...hence a new PC.I have wireless broadband where the ENA is running from.

Slackalice..PC is HP.Model:G5326 Windows 7.

I have a Virgin Superhub, the very latest ,only upgraded it in March.
Can use my laptops outside and everywhere in the house,,which has good thick walls, not one of these new houses which are built in a day!!
I did put a couple of answers on your other thread
http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/Technology/Question1339491-2.html

If you read your manual chapter 'Getting Started' page 6, it will show that you have an Ethernet plug (RJ45) at the rear of your pc. If you haven't got the manual you can d/l it from here.
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01863412.pdf

With the pc switched off, can you insert ethernet cable from the the pc's RJ45 plug into the base of your powerline plug. At the other powerline plug which should be near your Virgin Router can you do the same and connect both by ethernet cable. Remove the USB plug in and start pc, see if you can get a connection.

Hi SlackAlice...just looked at the PC`s manual you kindly gave me the link to.At the moment I have the Network Adapter plugged into the Ethernet socket in PC.
and the other Network Adapter into my Virgin Router./There are all sorts plugged in the back ,printer, mouse keyboard and something else...that I don`t know what it is...the cables are all of a tangle...will have to sort them out!!!
Question Author
Forgot something...powerline plug...???? do you mean mains socket???
Question Author
Incase you are wondering why I have two threads going...didn`t seem to get an any answers on the first on Technical posts.so put one on the Computer posts.
Oh Kloofnek, your posts do cheer me up ! Oh what a "tangled web", at least you are more tech savvy than me !

Whirly...soooo pleased to have cheered you up...tech savvy..I bet these other tech pros, think I am utterly thick!!!!
Question Author
Methyl...I am thick!!!!
really don`t understand.
At the moment...one Ethernet Network Adapter plugged into Ethernet socket in my PC,the other is in my Virgin router...both are also plugged into mains sockets.
The Virgin Technician did it when he installed my new router,so I imagine it must be correct ..this does not affect my laptops as they are both wireless ..it is just the PC which is not...I don`t really have a problem with it even though we sometimes lose internet connection on it but one just clicks on Troubleshooting which usually fixes it...but ...my dear son is not a happy bunny about that as it interrupts his pool game he plays online, which I suppose can be a pain... but . to buy a new PC...I would put up with it especially as it is only 3 years old.!!!

These are what I am using to bring Wireless connection to the desktop PC which is NOT wireless enabled
http://www.7dayshop.com/7dayshop-network-500mbps-mini-homeplug-powerline-ethernet-network-adapter-twin-pack

Those things do not bring a wireless connection to the desktop, they bring a WIRED connection to the desktop.
Question Author
See how thick I am !!!!
All I know is they bring the wireless connection to the PC,without the Network Connectors this desktop has no internet connection, yes I suppose they are WIRED i the fact they are attached with a little ethernet cable.
Don`t think I will ever work out the tech knowledge of a computer.

Thank you everyone for your input.
So if this connection fails every now and again, and you think its because you are plugging into a surge-protected extension then you should do as I suggested earlier and temporarily move the desktop near to a wall socket and plug directly into that and see how it goes. If it works for a long time without failing then you are probably right that it's the surge protection that's causing the problem. In that case you need to find a way to connect the desktop to the mains via a non surge-protected socket.
Also your desktop DOES have an ethernet connection, but its not a wireless connection. The ethernet cable goes into the back of your desktop somewhere and that's where the desktop ethernet connection is.
By purchasing a WiFi USB dongle and forgetting about the WIRED connection (pull the ethernet cable out of the plug or your desktop or both) you will be able to connect to your router wirelessly via the USB dongle and avoid the problems with surge-protected plugs.
This will cost you next to nothing.
Did you try out my last paragraph on my 11.30 post and what was the result?
Question Author
Yes Slackalice, that is how it already is.I don
Question Author
Sorry went before finished.
As I was saying ,that is how it is already done.
The problem of losing connection now and then doesn`t bother me as it is easily rectified with Troubleshooting from the Internet Icon...it is my moaning son!!!
So there's no usb ethernet connector plugged in?
Now check your speeds here and post the results

http://www.uswitch.com/broadband/speedtest/

I have the same Superhub 2 and up to 152Mb, but I have a direct ethernet cable connection and my speeds are

Download 150.9Mb
Upload 11.2Mb
Question Author
Hi again, when you say a "direct ethernet cable",how is it set up,is it coming from your topset box(mine is TiVo) or the router?
