My Avast demanded to be updated yesterday, so I did. Now when I plug my external hard drive in (a little Maxell portable) nothing comes up and I can't back things up. I assume these two events are connected as there was no trouble till today.

Is there any way to tell Avast to permit it? Or of restoring the earlier Avast? (Though I assume the latter would be risky.)

(Please don't advise installing MSE instead as I had the same trouble with it in the past; that's why I installed Avast in the first place.)

I use up-to-date Avast on W8.1 and don't have this problem. If you right-click the Avast icon in the task tray you'll find the 'Avast Shield Controls' where you can disable it for a period - see if the drive is recognised when Avast is disabled. I suspect it won't make a difference.

That's pretty jno.
That's lovely jno. Is it a wetland place ?
Blimey Robinia, it doesn't seem five mins since we sat up holding your virtual hand waiting for him to arrive.Children's parties have changed somewhat since my day. They just bounced about on the furniture and got jelly up the walls.I bet you were pleased to see your other grandchildren.
Yes he's really ruthless Neti. What he did to Pasha was terrible.
Night all.

no, pretty dryland, shaney. It's the top of a hill looking out over London - the little blue bits in the background are sort of west London, I think. It's Stanmore Country Park, quite dense woodland on three sides, then the higher land is covered in all the grasses and flowers.
That’s interesting Jno....there is a big patch of wild orchids there and here in the NF, they only grow where the soil is damp....I wonder if there is a patch of clay or something else which holds the water? Its mild and muggy here after a muggy night. I am having a minor celebrate because I am caught up on my cardboard recycling....its amazing how many cardboard boxes I had stuffed with stuff...and of course when you buy by mail order, much of it comes packed in cardboard anyway its all gorn and I have done most of my reorganisation purchasing :)
Question Author
I think the lower reaches are mostly London clay, but that's the woodland. Higher up it's supposed to be better draining, but there are quite likely clay-ey patches around

The open area of wild flowers is actually Wood Farm, which was closed to the public until quite recently. Letting people in has scared off some of the wildlife, and there's a project aiming at bringing back skylarks in particular.
I wonder if its what the birds are used to? One of the best places to hear skylarks around here is along a fairly busy dogwalk.

I assume letting humans return amounted to a change of habitat - not that there were many humans there yesterday (we saw about five in more than an hour), and I don't know that there ever are, though some group had left a heap of rubbish scattered round one seat.

Apparently there have been unconfirmed reports of wild boar there, but I'll believe that when I see one.
If you do, be ready to leg it!
Question Author
oh, I'll take a spit with me next time I go.
Oh wild boar, ate that on Friday night and it was delicious and tender. So catch it if you can jno!
Late morning all...lol
Been a a warm day but very overcast.Looks better for tomorrow but then thunderstorms .Definitely not the weather for boar hunting.
Nothing doing here ,just the usual and watching some of the tennis.

That's very interesting Jno .I saw something on tele about skylarks only recently .I think it was on Look East, up in the fens where a farmer was leaving parts of his fields unploughed and cutting the wheat short so that they could nest as they are on the red list apparently.
When we lived in Lower Morden we had a huge meadow at the back of the houses which they turned into a sort of wild life place with ponds etc.It has a tributary of the Wandle running through it,the Beverley Brook , and we used to see lots of herons and kingfishers. We weren't far from the main road but walking around there you would have thought you were in the the countryside. London has lots of lungs.
Hope you're all ok .Sleep tight.
I spoke to a very nice lady at the pensions department this morning who confirmed that the pension statement that they sent me is correct and she has no idea why the line about widows’ benefits is in there because she can see quite clearly on my record that they knew I had received it...so that’s another thing sorted....next is tax return.
Evening all. Nothing to report.
Shaney I watched on YouTube the Missing Prince John who had epilepsy, and died age 13. Such a sweet looking child and so sad.
Evening all
Nothing to report here either.Did some gardening out the front, just snipping about.I thought I'd lost my pink mops when I scythed them nearly to the ground back in the early spring but they've really recovered well and have loads of blooms.

Watched some tennis ,two really entertaining matches on centre court today.
Well done with the pension Woofy ,pleased it's sorted for you.I found them very helpful when I had my queries.
Yes ,I've seen that on tv Neti .Poor lad .He was probably autistic .It wouldn't be swept under the carpet nowadays.
Did you ever see the one about the Queen Mother's nieces who were shut away in a home for fifty odd years .
Hope you've all had a good day.Night, sleep tight.
Question Author
ah me, I'm supposed to be going out this morning, so what do I do? Go to bed at 1am, wake up at 3.30. I'd better find some matches to prop my eyelids open.
Hello all....its hot and muggy here again but no storm which is a blessing. Dogs are sunbathing, i am not :)
Good day to you all.
Jno I was awake from 1.30 til 5am thanks to the damned cat. We could have conversed!
Just been to hairdressers and also had eyebrows tinted. Blimey had so many white ones that now they are coloured they look thick yuk. Keep scrubbing with nail varnish remover and salt. Getting better!!!
Gone back to sweaty here and it was so pleasant last week. s
Robi, are you there? Are you still watching Casualty/Holby? What is the agenda of that horrid nurse friend of jac's?
It sloshed it down and thundered all afternoon here after a lovely morning, but I think it's all cleared off now.Nothing for it but to park myself on the sofa and watch tennis from sunny Wimbledon.
The air is a bit fresher now though.Hope you're all ok.
happily the storms passed us by. I was a bit concerned about Shughy as he has been ill so recently. Its been really warm here all day and still is. We have pottered and siesta’d. Forecast is for a bit cooler from saturday which will be good
