My Avast demanded to be updated yesterday, so I did. Now when I plug my external hard drive in (a little Maxell portable) nothing comes up and I can't back things up. I assume these two events are connected as there was no trouble till today.

Is there any way to tell Avast to permit it? Or of restoring the earlier Avast? (Though I assume the latter would be risky.)

(Please don't advise installing MSE instead as I had the same trouble with it in the past; that's why I installed Avast in the first place.)

I use up-to-date Avast on W8.1 and don't have this problem. If you right-click the Avast icon in the task tray you'll find the 'Avast Shield Controls' where you can disable it for a period - see if the drive is recognised when Avast is disabled. I suspect it won't make a difference.

Shaney you want to see what some of my friends are saying on FB about “the list” and paying for the privelege

Oh it's been a grey grumpy day here and bloomin' chilly with it although there's been no rain as yet .It'll probably chuck it down later tonight .
That's awful Neti .Poor woman.
I haven't got FB Woofy but I have been reading comments on line in the newspapers. He may also be denied his vote in the local elections yet they've been happy to take his taxes and other contributions all these years and now he could become a totally disenfranchised second class citizen.I don't trust these arrangements either .Once we leave the EU they could move the goalposts yet again.
It's not financially viable for us to go back to Germany either. He's really annoyed about it and so am I.
Oh well que sera, sera.Night all ,sleep tight.
Evening all. Just back from a very nice meal until Spanish karaoke started to play as it was a huge table full of young girls and a birthday. It was dreadful. So we legged it and quite pleased to be home again. We had rain this afternoon but not for long.
What is this "list" of which you speak? I'm not too worried about brexit. We only have to local vote anyway and they can remove that it won't bother me. I'll be glad to have photo I.d. cards again. Lotsbod Brits are panicking but we should be ok.
its now rained here for 24 hours pretty much without pause. its also very misty and humid. The garden really needs it though and the slow continuous rain is just what it does need. Dogs not happy but not worried. shughy needs to be accompanied to pee in the rain so I have an umbrella by the front door. In other news, in order to claim my pension the DWP need some paperwork (stuff they originally sent me ha!) so today is turn the house upside down day.

rained overnight, not this morning, so that's a little help for the parched garden. Went to see the V&A's £50m new entrance. Very nice, though at that price it should be. Women's and men's loos are all pale pink.
Hello all
Piddling with rain here too and very grey.
Neti the list will be a register at the Home Office. He will have to provide reams of personal info, have his fingerprints taken and biometric recognition and so on and so forth and then he'll get an ID card.
Although ,David Davis can't make his mind up if it will be a card or not.The man who was totally against ID cards now wants 3 million people to have them . If he doesn't comply with all this then he will be deported.
I've dug out an old passport of his from 1975 which is stamped with the indefinite right to remain in the UK,so why he now has to jump through hoops is beyond me .I am very angry.
Hope you're all ok though.
Paperwork found. It was where it should have been but where it should have been isn’t accessed often and is well tucked away. have started teaching Rab to have his nails filed as one of them which should be wearing isn’t for some reason. Their nails are black so cutting is not an option also Rab is quite wary around his feet and I want him to carry on trusting me. His bro is the total opposite. I expect by the time I have got Rab to allow me to file, the nail will have worn down naturally and my efforts will be wasted but heigh ho. It has stopped raining but is still very misty and humid.
Good day. We had our fingerprints taken very time we applied here for residence status before UK went into the EU we now have permanent status but who knows what hoops and loops well have to jump through again when we are EU free!!
Its so windy here. The new pergola took off so Mr N had to get out the drill and tether it. Am watching it warily! lilo and swim ring are floating around the land as I speak!
moan coming up. I am utterly fed up with hot flushes. Its not the actual heat its the moment of sick and giddy that comes with them....surely to goodness 20 years is enough?
loving the post rain coolth
That's an awful long to be going through the change Woofy .Mind you I still get a hot flush sometimes but they are very few and far between.I remember my mum having them occasionally in her early sixties. She threw a wobbly and a saucepan at my dad once :)
Why don't you go and have a chat with your doctor about it .
It's stopped raining for now .First day of the Norfolk show today and it was a total washout .It's been more like October here today than June.
That looks very nice how they've done the V&A Jno .I had a look online about it.
I really hope you don't have to go through all this palaver Neti .I wish they would just leave law abiding people alone to live their lives in peace.Mr S has always loved living here and now he feels somehow unwelcome.
Night all,sleep tight.

I do periodically Shaney. I am assured that its normal for a given value of normal. Doctors seem to want to talk about my weight, blood pressure and cholesterol and are disappointed when they find that despite the former, both of the latter are normal....I just need the occasional moan. I feel very much for you and Mr S and many of my “in pat” and expat facebook friends. I seriously think the government don’t know what to do about long term residents ATM. Its like pensions. I am just about to claim mine and have variously be told that I will get an increase based on DH’s contributions, that I won’t, that I definitely won’t and won’t get a full pension, that I might and the latest, that I will except they have based their decision on incorrect facts so I need to correct their facts, even though its about payment of widows benefit which they paid and therefore should know they have paid. I feel really sorry for the employees involved as they have kept saying to me this is what we know now according to this weeks (even sometimes today’s!) guidance but please keep checking.
Its hard not to feel picked on and victimised. Loads of us do feel for you and are very unhappy about the wave of bullying that brexit seems to have unleashed.
Aw Woofy ,that is so nice of you .
Getting your pension seems like a nightmare. Were you in the bracket where they moved the goalposts ? I feel sorry for the people who have to sort out this government inflicted red tape as well. Not a job I would like to do.
It's a grey day again and it's really chilly .I'm sitting here with a jumper and cardi on ....in June?
I was just thinking ,I got my pension at 60 but I remember it being a bit of a hassle because of living abroad at certain times, where, although I had jobs I didn't accrue enough credits and then of course time off for child rearing.I also had jobs where I didn't earn enough to make contributions.I did pay in extra at some stage and of course they couldn't find it at first. I remember having to provide dates for when I wasn't in the country.I hope they sort it out soon as for you Woofy, you've slogged long enough for it!
yep I am in the pension losers club. My friend who was born in January the same year as me got her pension 18 months earlier and under different calculations. Anyway the letter has been posted so its wait and see time. I am lucky really that I have a private pension too....not saying the extra won’t be welcome but whatever happens I won’t be on the breadline!
I got my pension at 60 too. If I'd had waited until 65 I'd have got more but you never know do you. I don't get much obvs as I've lived here and in my days there was no pension scheme here. Mr N should get a decent one from Spain. It's funny, they voted Brexit to keep the foreigners out but all its done it begger up the legal ones!
yes, I could have deferred taking it but I don’t trust any party to honour that agreement either.
Its not that I didn't trust them woofy, wasn't sure if I'd still be here!! Anyway I wanted some money!
Shaney just started watching The Crown, finally!!!
I hope you enjoy it Neti,I thought it was great.
I've been watching The Americans tonight . I'm up to the bit where she's found out that the scientist chap wants to feed the world not damage Russian crops with pests. It's brilliant.I love the disguises and I spotted Martha in the supermarket.
My state pension isn't mega money either but we are glad that we provided ourselves with a small private pension and Mr S gets his works pension ,state pension and a pension from Germany so it all adds up.At least I can buy a designer handbag from time to time .
I'm joking of course.
Night all ,sleep tight.
