My Avast demanded to be updated yesterday, so I did. Now when I plug my external hard drive in (a little Maxell portable) nothing comes up and I can't back things up. I assume these two events are connected as there was no trouble till today.

Is there any way to tell Avast to permit it? Or of restoring the earlier Avast? (Though I assume the latter would be risky.)

(Please don't advise installing MSE instead as I had the same trouble with it in the past; that's why I installed Avast in the first place.)

I use up-to-date Avast on W8.1 and don't have this problem. If you right-click the Avast icon in the task tray you'll find the 'Avast Shield Controls' where you can disable it for a period - see if the drive is recognised when Avast is disabled. I suspect it won't make a difference.

Good luck at the dentist Neti!
Morning, yay I have teeth on one side at least! Top one on its way. Didn't hurt one but she slotted it in and hey presto. And 40€ cheaper than quoted.
Sweltering.
Ooh not so easy to eat with these new teeth, but dentist said mouth is still healing after extraction and to go back if hurts too much hassle. I can always pop them out!
Shaney am doing The Americans, was waiting for the complete set, but not happening so it's one by one, will check it's all working before I send it off.
I didn't type hassle, this stoopid predictive text comes out with some rubbish sometimes!
Well done Neti .They are a bit uncomfortable at first but I have no problems with my bottom three on a denture. You can cushion them with some fixative so they don't rub.The Americans has started here on Encore which we don't get so am looking forward to it .
Lovely day here ,ideal temps.Nice sea breeze.
Hope you're all ok .
You might have burst a little blood vessel in your nose Woofy .I hope it's ok now .
Nothing doing really just pottering in the garden but more sitting and watching the sparrows jumping about than actual work.
This fire in London is terrible.
Shaney, email!
That’s excellent news Neti. I had an enforced quiet day today. Nose started bleeding again after I showered and when I googled, it said I shouldn’t have showered or bathed and to not do any activities bent over or any strenuous stuff for 24 hours. All seems to be well now and it wasn’t much of a bleed, just unexpected. Its been very hot here anyway today....too hot to do much and the dogs have been asleep.
Morning all. Normal hot day here. Have made scotch eggs from scratch for dinner. I cantnimagine living in a country where you can buy everything. Its nice here t now hat we can now buy Russian salad, colelaw and all types of salads here which save a lot.

I am back chez moi in my own petit chateau and enjoying the balmy weather.
Good morning all fair biddies. Hope Robi is ok and woofy's nose.
Welcome back jno.
I must get up and it's seems most clement outside.
At night I have different coloured solar lamps hanging in the pergola and it looks really pretty. Mr N not at all impressed!
Off to chemist to find tooth powder to stop new teeth rubbing, not that they do but it's a just in case.
Morning all
Welcome back Jno.
Lovely day again and looks set to get even warmer over the weekend.
Nothing exciting here apart from the headline in the local rag.
"Bodies found on pub's land" .
They're building a Wetherspoons in the High St and have discovered bones ( so not exactly bodies ) and the remains of a crypt. This ties in with the fact that there was a priory here hundreds of years ago, a part of which is still at the top of the street and is now a small park surrounded by the old wall.
It's all on hold now while they investigate. Very interesting.
Hope you're all ok.
Oh shaney that sounds all very Midsomer, I wouldn't be surprised if jno didn't tootle down for a look see!!
They are saying it could be from an old methodist chapel which was demolished in the fifties but methodist chapels don't have crypts and very few have burial grounds. There used to be a leper house here so perhaps it's to do with that, but my money's on the priory .
I hope they call in some archaeologists and get it excavated properly.I'm sure the natives can wait for their curries and a pint for a while longer :)
shaney, I think its the law that they have to. The school I went to was said to have been built on a plague pit but I think it was actually close by not under. Boiling here again today.
We have been out for our Friday lunch and
as I wasn't expecting it I had wet hair as had just done my roots. I get a lot of dark roots now hair is platinum , so it's every two weeks, what a bind and with my thick hair and this spikey style I cannot hide them. It's so hot 32° in the shade outside at the restaurant and there was a breeze. I'm not going good to be a letter to cope this year. Nose and eye are driving me mad, taken anti histamine and a vick inhaler to try to ease it.
Middle sis has just phoned and big sister now has shingles on top,or for all that she has suffered already. I'm worried that I may catch it. Not being selfish but couldnt cope with that here in this heat.
Been for a nuddy swim now on bed in cool.
Neti, you don’t catch shingles. It is caused by chicken pox virus lodged in a nerve root from having chicken pox. people with shingles shed the virus from the rash but it gives people chicken pox if they haven’t had it, not shingles. Here endeth the lecture :) Had a good day here today did a bit of sorting and tidying, made a sourdough pancake batter which works over night and gets cooked tomorrow, posted my Fil’s father’s day card, moved ten sacks of compost and put a a bit of stuff away in my new craft room. Not bad for a boiling hot day

quite a muggy day, I have been weeding and was feeling sweti even though I was in the shade. Fortunately I can hear a can of vodka and lemonade whistling to me.
its warm here too. I have moved my two wildlife ponds into posh new turquoise pots which are much bigger and repotted two clematis into a big tub. There is plenty more that needs doing but that’s enough for today. Later I might move some sacks of earth.
Scorchio here and not a breath of a sea breeze to cool it down.
It's been a sit under the brolly with a book and cold drink day.Too warm to move but have to move now and do a bit of dinner which will consist of throwing some cold meat and salad on plate .
Hope you're all ok .Keep cool .....makes a change from keep warm :)
