I have used 9800Pro's a lot in the past. They can be problematical with their drivers tho .. and can have problems with some motherboards like Asrocks. I didn't use any Radeon drivers, I use the OMEGA Radeon drivers. They are better .. and tweaked.
Have you checked the fan is running on the card? .. and the fan is clean.
I think the card could be overheating.
A better bet is to mod the card with a better cooler fan. Easy to bolt on.

i had no problem with this card for 4 years on xp
only while ive been on win7, i checked with radeon site and it said 9800 pro had no issues with win 7 32 bit
ill try the omega drivers, (motherboard is asus)

No worries. Sounds like card problem tho .. like overclocked or something like that.

Sometime ago I had a problem with an old Radeon 3200 PCI graphics card on XP. XP SP3 was not supported, but it worked OK for me. Then all of a sudden the graphics card would more often than not, fail to boot up or crash. I suspected it was an automatic update that had caused some sort of conflict. Not being supported, and unable to resolve the problem - in the end I gave up on the card and replaced it.

Having done a quick google for the 9800 Pro, there are people who have problems with it (besides you) – one suggestion (on those threads) is to re-install whatever version of DirectX you are using.

You might have to replace the card with something more up to date – you can pick up a bargain on ebay (that’s where I got mine).
My replacement for a 9800Pro is usually the X800XT.
Cheap to buy now.
