Tiger was unlucky today with his putting and did well to end up -3

With only one winner, how on earth do you get your money back if a favorite wins if you have bet on 16 players?

I dont bet, but surely if you bet say £1 on each player that is £16, but if a 6/1 player wins you only get £6 so overall lose out.

Please explain.
