As well as rustling camels these people had abused the hospitality and care offered to them when they were ill by their hosts. It's as though they took that camel urine and milk and threw it back in their faces.
If thieving wasn't considered such a bad thing then, it must have been the abuse of hospitality that merited the draconian punishment.

The answer to the OP is emphatically "no", it does not say you should kill people of different faiths, no matter what rubbish and lies are being spread about on the internet and on these disagreeable and misinformed AB threads.
naomi; you say you have "quite clear" opinion on "interpretation" of the Koran. To gain entitlement to an opinion it must informed, to be informed on an interpretation you must have at least some knowledge of the language from which the translation was made, without that you cannot have an opinion, you can only have, at best, a guess.
So I ask you again, do you have any understanding of Arabic?

No, Quran does not say anything like that. Few people will quote few verses out of context and would even go out of their way to ignore verses soon after or one before to see the meanings they want to see.

By the way, it is estimated that only 15% of Muslims speak Arabic. The rest of them are stuck with the same translations as you, Maggiebee, VE, Ratter, me, and the world at large. If you’re prepared to tell the 85% who don’t speak Arabic that the translations they’re using are wrong, and they believe you, I reckon you’re in line for a Nobel Peace Prize, Khandro. I'm surprised a man as widely read as you hasn't bothered to read it himself. Had you done so you could hardly have overlooked the prophet's calls to behead his enemies and have their fingers struck from their hands. I don't see why quoting a respected Islamic source such as Al Bukhari can be considered either irrelevant or mischievous, which is what you imply it is. I chose the example in order to show the cruel and vindictive nature of the prophet and how such cruelty is approved by his followers. I take a mild pleasure from your suggestion that I was quoting from a dodgy web site. In this instance it's you who needs to be better informed.
The other quotation is from Karen Armstrong's book Mohammed. If you haven't heard of her Google the name. Her imaginative rebranding of banditry as an early form of socialism is the least nauseating of her misrepresentations: she excuses the suborning of murder by deceit and child rape just as casually.

If I may add to that^, although no Muslim would ever acknowledge it, the hadith sometimes overrides what we’re told is the unerring authority of the Koran. For example, the Koran forbids the alteration of Allah’s creation in any way but Mohammed commands circumcision. Result – all Muslim men are circumcised. Mohammed 1 – Allah 0.
