I was expecting to see that she had been lying for a few months but not 5 years.

I live alone and don't know my neighbours and I have no idea if the flat down stairs is actually occupied. It makes me wonder how long it would be before somebody missed me.

The world has changed so much in such a short span of time. What happened to nosey neighbours ?

How I long for the days of nosey neighbours! It is a sad indictment of our changing society that we no longer know our neighbours, care about them or have any idea about their welfare. I knew most of my neighbours when I was a child and everybody kept an eye out for the old and infirm. We have progressed in many ways in this world, but socially I believe we are failing one another badly.

tragic. surely there were people who should have checked on her. her GP? the Council Tax people?

really sad.
I've been to the scenes of what are commonly known as "sudden deaths" and, believe me, once someone has been dead for even as little a time as a week, they stink to high heaven.

I'm therefore astounded that this poor old dear may have been there for up to 5 years. What about the amount of mail which had been put through the door? Her postman must have been Michael Jackson wearing his face mask, for cripes sakes !!!
Tragic but not the sadest story.
my partner always goes on at me about being too nosey, but after reading that story im glad i am. Iknow when and where my neighbours are on holiday, i know that if there not not out walking there dogs in the morning then somethings wrong etc. Its so sad that she did not have a single visitor for all that time, call me cynicle but i bet 'family' will come crawling out of the woodwork now for the family jewels.......poor woman!
No Council Tax demands for five years, no rent or service charge demands? Did nobody notice that the lady's pension had not been collected?
It says she paid for everything via direct debit and I very much doubt the government would remind you if you stopped collecting pension!
This is a very sad story, to think no-one missed her. You would have thought that someone somewhere, would wonder what had happened to her.

As has been said unfortunately, in the present day nobody bothers about the people around them. I use to have an elderly neighbour, I always knew if she was around.

I hope she is given a decent burial, and that no nasty people appear to claim what they can.

May she rest in peace.
