If someone ask'd you how you are and then totally ignores your response, then did they really ask?

I was always taught that the correct response to 'How are you?' is 'How are you?'. It's a simple manners/courtesy thing.
It may someone have insisted them to ask "How are you?", Well, I get sometimes annoyed.
if you know someone is a hypochondriac don't ask them how they are

I would say "Y'aright?" as a greeting but "What like are you?" if I knew they were unwell or there was something going on.
For me the greeting conversation usually goes something like this:

Them: "How are you?"
Me: "Hi."
Them: "That's nice."
My response is always 'not too bad, and yer self?'
All depends who it is. I usually say, "Fine Thanks" If I know them well, I might smile and say, " How long have you got?"....
Same here, Patsy.

Entirely depends on who is asking me.
same as Patsy, usually followed by 'and you?'

if they ignore you, then either they're rude or just ask'd out of habit and not out of interest.
How are you.?
Still got a pulse thanks.
To use the modern parlance, "I'm good".
I think I've related this before but it makes me chuckle. Jim Bowen was hosting that most cerebral of game shows, "Bullseye". He introduced one of the contestants, who said her name was "Gladys" (I think).

JB: "And how are you, Gladys?"
Gladys: "Oh I'm fine thanks, Jim"
JB: "Super, smashing, great. And is there a Mr Gladys at home?"
Gladys: "No Jim. I'm afraid I've been a widow for seven years."
JB: "That's super, smashing, great. And now for couple number three."

Let's have a look at what you would've won!
