In Gaelic, 'Ard-na-saighead'...with the last word there pronounced roughly as 'sate'...means 'Height of Arrows.' 'Arthur's seat' is almost certainly just a corruption of that. In support of that, there are the remains of an Iron Age fort on the hilltop. There is also the view - expressed in several of the Arthurian legends - that King Arthur was a Scottish prince. Thje hilltop was probably also seen, therefore, as a suitable 'throne' for such a great hero.
