So that people like us can sit at their computer all day without having to switch off to go to the shops.

Like anything, a niche was there which had to be exploited.
Why go to a dealership when you can order your new car online.
Why go to the shops when you can order your weeks shopping from work.
Want some toys or oo la la lingerie? Online for anonymity!

It also helps fat peoples knees... of course it helps fat people stay and get fatter!

It`s also a boon for disabled/housebound people who can not get to the shops.
