Most of the stuff is made to sell at one pound. Genuine bargains are not too common.
It's an amazing place, but ours has no parking so people don't seem to buy huge amounts. If they can sell for £1 by buying in bulk, it just shows you how much profit the others are making - but is the H&B bag the same brand? I tried Morrisons Liquorice Allsorts and they are not a patch on Bassetts.
I bought some sets of 6 slate coasters for £1. Goodness knows what they would have been in some posh accessories shop.
I prefer '99p Stores' to 'Poundland'.

No, I'm not so stingy as to be bothered by the penny difference!
It's just that 99p Stores stock a much better food range.

Do they have a 99p shop and poundland in Sheffield by any chance?
Yes, there are two Poundlands, valerie - Meadowhall and the Moor - very easily Googled.
Thanks boxtops.
I love Poundland's books. I have bought about 15 or so since our shop opened in Canterbury.

But I was after a particular book and ordered it in Waterstones. I paid £18.99 and was happy with my purchase... then I walked into the Poundshop and they had the self same book for £1!! So I bought it again, then took the other book back to Waterstones and told them my wife had just informed me she had ordered the book on the internet from Waterstones. Yep, they fell for it and I got a full refund. So was I happy or was I happy? lol
How disgusting!

Liquorice Allsorts. Eurgh!
You clever little devil charlie! I would not have thought of that - would just have stood there crying.
Can't say I'm a fan of pound shops, I always wonder how much the factory workers are being paid if by the time it gets here it's still only selling for £1 after it's been imported and marked up by the store.
D97, a lot of it's the same stuff though - ours has got Nescafé and branded stuff, Heinz soup, all £1.
Fair enough, like I say I don't go in them so don't know for sure what they sell.
They are quite good, their umbrellas are useless though. Not that you can complain for a pound.
My best buy was a sellotape dispenser with 3 or 4 rolls of sellotape for £1. I also bought a sheet to make an angel costume for my grand-daughter for £1.
My best buy was an alarm clock/radio that came with battery - am still using over 2 years on with the same battery!! - how's that for value?
bixa80, that is really a bargain
I like to buy plastic conainters to freeze things in. I used to get 5 for £1 in a pack, but last week they changed to 4 in the pack. Its still a bargain.

I feel a bit of a hypocrite though as I prefer not to think of all the stuff being made so cheaply in china and shipped over here in those massive container ships full of cr*p.
Most of it is normal stuff that is bought by the container load. Often they have no idea what they are buying except it is x amount of units.
They have contracts with manufacturers and huge suppliers to take stuff that have been left on the shelves.
Some things in poundland and 99p shops are dearer than in supermarkets, you do have to be careful.
