Try your local library or council. The library are usually very helpful. Look in your local paper, sometimes you get a historian writing a column about what the area used to be like years ago, with old photos (we have in our Surrey Comet). The library are usually very helpful.

Look at the house deeds. They'll give all the dates and owners, and you can take it from there.
