According to a fairly recent etymological dictionary, it is of unknown origin, but was first used to describe the central area of ancient Greece.

The word is Greek in origin and based on 'Europa', the king of Tyre's daughter, who was carried off by Zeus in the shape of a bull according to the myth. She personified the continent.
