I think I have a wisdom tooth coming through and it is really painful. Does the pain go or does it mean that I will have to see a dentist. I can only get to see a private one around here and I really dont have the money for that at the moment so trying to avoid it as much as I can.

Mine hurt a bit when they came through - just took pain killers.  They seemed to grow for a few days at a time.  If they seem to be coming through straight and aren't pushing your other teeth out of position I shouldn't have thought you'd need a dentist.  Could the pain be an infection? If so I'd try some mouthwash for a few days and if that doesn't clear it up go to the dentist. Bonjella really helps too.
I found that ice on the area helped too. If you do need to see a dentist, it might be worth ringing NHS direct or going to your doctor. If it is an infection, there are some emergency dental services provided directly by the NHS and I think that these are still free.

Oil of cloves really good for toothache but really really vile!

As long as they are coming through straight you should be fine, unless your teeth are already crowded.  I was once told that wisdom teeth move every spring and autumn once fully grown and can vouch for the fact that mine go through phases of causing me pain, jaw ache, ear ache etc but are apparently fine.

Make sure you clean them well tho!!!

Same here... had pain in mine only last week. It's my last to come through and has been doing so, on and off, for about 3-4 years now. It's painful as hell for a few days and then goes.

After each 'pain' session, it has risen a little and then stays put for 6 months or so.

Found Ambesol great and doesn't take the skin off my mouth like Cloves - was recommended this by a pharmacist for this very reason.

On the subject of wisdom teeth. At my last check up 2 weeks ago my dentist told me to make a further appt to have a wisdom tooth removed but it does'nt bother me or ache so I dont see the need to have it taken out. What would other AB'rs do?  thanks.

is it supposed to feel like i have a golf ball in my mouth? It's really odd because I cant see anything. Im a bit worried it might be an infection rather then a wisdom tooth now.
