Having wisdom teeth out at dentist
Hi, one of my wisdom teeth has decayed and is gradually breaking away, the other is also decaying but not as bad as the first. My dentist has suggested I have them both taken out but I'm very scared as I've heard horror stories about removal of wisdom teeth. Can anyone tell me their experience of having wisdom teeth removed by dentist. TIA.

I had my top wisdom teeth taken out and was worried about the pain as they weren't fully through the gum. I needn't have worried! Sure, it's not the most comfortable thing to do but it wasn't painful during the procedure or afterwards. My gums were a bit tender after but soon healed. Good luck!

yes me to wen i got there and he said we are going to have to take it out i felt sick, i felt no pain and i didnt even know he had taken it out, honestly it isnt as bad as u think.

Sorry, but I had mine out and it was an absolute nightmare. I know my dentist to be good at what she does, but I had to be sedated for the second one. The first had to be 'levered' out against my bottom jaw which was unbearably uncomfortable and caused a lot of bleeding and post op' bruising. The second one had broken and so was also difficult, but with enough sedation I just groaned my way through... good luck.

Hi Louise!
People only tend to tell you 'the horror stories' - it's human nature. They don't tell you about the vast majority that are extracted uneventfully. If the wisdom tooth is fully through into your mouth, then they are not really any different from extracting another tooth. It's only when they are still not fulyl through that they CAN be more difficult.
You need to discuss the procedure with your dentist. They can advise you as to how easy the process will be, and the approximate time involved. Also if the extraction is likely to be a 'surgical' where the gum is temporarily lifted back from the tooth to allow better visibility and access to the tooth. You can then make an infomed decision about having just a local anaesthetic, sedation of some kind, or a general anaesthetic if need be. Your dentist will advise you on the three options, and the pros/cons of each.
For any extraction, you would expect some post-operative pain for a few days, possibly some bruising also. This is normal. Sutures (stitches) are often used to help position the gum afterwards, and this is quite normal. They can be self-dissolving ones so as not to need having them removed afterwards. Your dentist will also discuss any other possible risks involved.
Please discuss this with your dentist and you can then both reach the right decision.

well this is why i was dreading it because the last tooth i had out years ago was by a women dentist.
I think men have more strength to get the tooth out quicker.

I have an absolute terror of the dentist.I can't even walk into the waiting room without having a panic attack but had to go because of the pain of a decayed wisdom tooth.I was outside on the pavement with a numb mouth in no time at all wondering what all the fuss had been about.l will never again worry about having an extraction(in fact have been back for another one to be taken out).It is totally painless and very quick.Good Luck

I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth out at the same time. Sorry, I'm not being mean but you asked for our experiences... I needed quite a few injections to numb the area, when the teeth were being pulled out,my nose felt like it was going to break (must be all connected somehow), I nearly swallowed one of the teeth when they pulled it out which caused me to gag! After I had all 4 out, I went outside and was sick and passed out lol! They stitched my gums up but that was the least of my worries! I've not been back to the dentists since but I think mine was maybe a one off and you'll be ok x

I think it can depend on how far the teeth are into your jaw as to problems afterwards.
Mine kept getting infected so they took one out in the chair then the other 3 under general anaesthetic.
The clinic were fantastic and I recovered very quickly with nowhere near as much pain as I thought I'd have and the stiches were find (just hard to leave alone haha).
I had mine done early afternoon and ate a proper tea in the evening.
