or is it just a myth bandied around by my mother to get out of housework for a day? and if it really is true, what about tumble drying? what about folding already dried washing?

i have never heard that one
I am superstitious (not mentally so, but a bit too much) and I have never heard this one. And tumble driers are quite new inventions and superstitions are quite old so don't see how that one would work.
There's loads of these lucky/unlucky things.
Empty the kitchen bin into the dustbin means you won't have any rubbish in your kitchen for example. I still haven't had anyone explain to me why filling the dust-bin is any different.
Yes, it is. Just like it's unlucky to cut your fingernails on a Friday................or a Sunday!
I hope not seeing as I've been on a mad mission most of the afternoon and early evening! Started a NY clearout and sorting stuff for recycling and charity and washing done and in the tumbledryer, so if it is then I'm doomed! :)
i am not sanguine about superstitions

--walking under black cats, and so forth--
It's about as unlucky as walking under a black cat.
Is it really unlucky to walk under a ladder ?
My mother-in-law always reckoned her husband died because she did the washing on New Year's Day......not sure if she knew about the superstition before. ;-)
OH would never let anyone do laundry on NYD after that. Me....I only have one superstition and it's not that.
in our family the rule is it is unlucky to wash clothes on New Year's day and Good Friday
Your cat wasn't there when I posted excelsior.
my washing machine is busted, so I don't have that dilemma.
The old superstition was "Don't do your washing on Near's Day or you will wash someone out of the family" - daft isn't it?
*New Year's Day - sorry - Firefox going crackers tonight, anyone else experiencing problems missing letters and going slow?
"...or is it just a myth..."?

isnt that what all superstitions are?
its a good one though, will have to think a few of those up myself haha
Yes I have always said it is unlucky and have never tempted fate. Even passed it on to my daughters.. Who also never do the washing on new years day. What isn't broken....as they say.
Mrs Owd has to wash every fecking day.
I've never heard that one either but I do lnow my greatgrandfather angrily took a pair of gloves off my greatgrandmother and threw them in the garden because she was washing them on a Sunday (but that was religion rather than superstition).
Hope its not true,I've done 4 loads today.
