When he speaks 'Ex Cathedra' he is infallible. Speaking on matters of dogma, and the like.
When he picks his numbers for his lottery ticket, he's as fallible as the rest of us.
ummmm.......I think that you are quite correct:

I may be totally wrong here, so please forgive me if that is so, BUT wasn't Cardinal Heanon once asked.."What would your reply be if in confessions someone said that she was taking the contraceptive pill?...and he replied "God bless you my child"

From that, I gather that he was not overtly opposed to contraception.
Wow they are improving. This is on top of apologising to Galileo after 400 years and accepting Darwin was right after 150 years. Eventually they might even admit that marriage is not an essential part of a loving relationship.

I think the church has realised they would become a complete anachronism if they didn't start to accept the realities staring them in the face.
62 post and rising, mostly of abuse and criticism.

Perhaps it would have been better for the Pope to have remained silent over this matter?
Beso...I also think that some, more modern, priests, understand that marriage is not essential.
AOG, what an odd thing to say. :o/
I look upon the Catholic church as a business. The Pope is the C.E.O, the Cardinals are the board of directors & the priests are middle management. They are all there to make a living....payed for by the gullible parishioners.
better late than never................... its a start.
/// AOG, what an odd thing to say. :o/ ///

Not necessarily so.

How many times have you kept your mouth shut, so as not to attract criticism, anger, prejudice and insults etc?
Had this post been specifically aimed at Catholics, which it isn't, it would have made sense, but what do opinions from people of other faiths matter?

Will the pope ensure that his paedophile priests use a condom ?
By acknowledging that the spread of HIV/AIDs could be eased by the use of condoms he has also acknowledged homosexuality. Of course this is an 'exceptional circumstance'. He still won't allow the poor men and women (usually in the third world and afraid of eternal damnation) from having a few more children they cannot afford.
AOG, //How many times have you kept your mouth shut, so as not to attract criticism, anger, prejudice and insults etc? //

I don't believe I'm known for it.
"Pope says you can now wear a johnny"

Thought the priests had been doing that for centuries, especially if that particular choir boy was called Johnny.

<beats a hasty retreat>
I tittered at yesterday's BBC1 breakfast news when the newsreader solemnly announced "The Pope shifts on condoms........". Tea and toast splattered all over the papers in our house at that little announcement.
BOO, that's dreadful!!! lolol, now shouldn't you be in training for Dec 7th instead of indulging in such smut!
with regard to the celibate pope in rome....

you no play the game...you no make the rules
He omits to say what flavour most users would prefer though !
Banana is quite popular ! ;-))
Pope says ... "You can now wear a johnny."

His Holiness has a good command of colloquial English.
