Do you carry spare fuel fuel?

I have a spare 5 litre can in both cars.

I would never drive anywhere without spare fuel.

Just little 5 litre plastic ones from Halfords, yellow.

The only time I've used my diesel can was when I pulled up alongside a lady who was standing on the roadside, beside her car, to ask if she was okay.

She'd run out of diesel.

Jayne to the rescue !
Tell me you drive with EMPTY fuel cans not ones carrying fuel?
Question Author
Ya ... an EMPTY fuel can would be REALLY useful !!!!!!!
Would not carry fuel in a container in my car. Purpose of carrying an empty container is to carry fuel from a garage to your car if you run out. Garages are not permitted to supply fuel in anything other than approved container - 5 litre max. Ferry companies and many EU countries ban spare fuel being carried. It is a highly dangerous practice as any escaping fuel vapour could be ignited by any shorting of electrics in car boot.
no way would i carry a full can of fuel in my vehicle - how dangerous!
JJ, if you are carrying fuel in a can in a car you might as well be carrying a bomb!...........someone rams you hard from behind (NOT a euphemism!) and that can in your boot could explode
Question Author
"shorting of electrics in car boot" ?

Happily, in 26 years of driving, that has only happened to me ... err, 0 times.

There are lots of things that are dangerous ... like being a lone girl, stranded on the roadside, having run out of fuel.

joe ... if someone rams my Land Cruiser from behind, the only thing that explodes is the front of their car !

=0)
.....except if a juggernaut is behind you
In your 26 years of driving how many times have you run out of fuel jj?
I would rather just keep the car topped up with fuel. keep the extra 5 litres in the tank
Question Author
Now, Mousey ... here's your problem ...

If I had run out of fuel quite a few times, that would support my argument.

If I have never run out of fuel, I can still pretend that it happens quite often.

=0)

Okay, I don't often run out of fuel. But ... if the needle is on red, and the next motorway services aren't for another 20 miles ... I don't need to panic.

JJ, you are a dangerous woman.........do you carry anything else 'useful' in your car 'just in case'?
I seem to recall that you smoke jj. Lighting a fag and fuel vapour..........wow!
I recall a rather interesting Mythbusters episode where they tried to set fire to a fuel tank by shooting bullets at it.

Absolutely riddled it with no joy - they had to use tracers bullets in the end to get it to go.

Of course you can be unlucky and it can catch a hot exhaust but comparing a spare can to a bomb is a bit overexcitable - I suspect Jayne's 4x4 is diesel anyway.
She doesn't smoke.....her mates does so she gets to freeze her tits off a lot.

So fuel tanks never explode upon impact in some RTA's?

Plastic fuel cans ain't as robust as fuel tanks

Would you be happy carrying fuel in a plastic container in your boot?
