I think many of us, on both sides of the divide understood that the decision of the referendum would need to be ratified by parliament before it could be implemented. I certainly did. In fact, all we were ever promised was a referendum.....not a binding referendum, nor one with a timescale for implementation.

I can see an election looming.

Nah. No chance. Not whilst there's no opposition.
Yet more backing for my theory ,which started as a joke!. That Theresa May has been intentionally 'set up to fail' at getting Brexit through parliment.
She fails and it is set out as 'not my fault I tried my best and failed' then the government has an excuse to do it's U turn and remain in the EU as they have always wanted and intended.

your MI5 file will be getting bigger Eddie.
What makes you think that the Rag-Tag and Bobtail of this rump will prevent a Bill from passing?
Losing the will but as a public service, Rag, Tag and Bobtail.

(I think I've entered a surrealist parallel universe)

Anyone write English around here?
Eddie, you are you are talking a lot of truth here . you reply makes a lot of sense. I think this Government are capable of this .
All this could be academic if Theresa May is successful with her appeal to the Supreme Court.
Question Author
Or, somewhat ironically, if that fails a potential appeal to the European Court of Justice.
The Brexit mess doesn't grow "Deeper" it just gets more stupid, thanks to schoolboy-politician half-wits like Farron.
The die is cast, Britain is leaving the EU, the terms cannot be discussed until negotiation has taken place, debate it then in parliament by all means, and maybe there would be room for fine-tuning, but the idea of a national referendum would be an irrelevancy.
Question Author
Tomayto / tomarto. The whole point of this is that the die isn't cast. It's still a molten blob of pig iron.
dannyK the appeal to the supreme court has NO POSSIBLE CHANCE of success unless the government lawyers can come up with a NEW and VALID LEGAL reason the original decision by the court of appeal was wrong! That is virtually impossible! The verdict was very clear and unanimous, all three judges came to the exact same decision!
I can only see that the appeal is all part of the 'set up' to get us to the point where the government can do it's U turn ( or rather do what it always intended from the very beginning)
That sounds interesting ZM.
If that were true then Theresa May would not have gone to the Supreme Court, she would have accepted the judges ruling.
There is no mess just some disappointed folk trying desperately to create one. Such ridiculous suggestions will be ignored. And I suspect the rebel 80 made a note of both by their party and their constituents, as someone who won't accept the expressed will of the people.
Some people are under the bizarre illusion that if the government is forced to to put the matter before parliament they will lose. They won't.
One doesn't have to go to any European Court, One simply has to have a quick debate, hold the 'permission to go ahead' vote thus confirming the agreement pre-referendum, then get on with it having leapt over the small but irritating hurdle those who wish to cause trouble will have created.
Question Author
OG, what don't you understand about the LEGAL process happening here? It has absolutely nothing to do with 'those who wish to cause trouble'. The only 'trouble' is that many of those who voted leave didn't educate themselves as to the complexity of the referendum's outcome.
Absolutely nothing. What don't you understand about it being brought to the courts in the first place by troublemakers and now this further group of troublemakers trying to use it to redo the referendum so whatever terms are negotiated can be rejected because you can't please al the people all the time ? Surely you see that is the intent.
