....so says a government review
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/09/10/traditions-such-as-christmas-celebrations-will-die-out-unless-pe/

but really, is that such a bad thing when to most people in britain now (apart from the devout) it has no religious significance and is now nothing more than an orgy of consumerist consumption?

Advert? Did you mean advent? Freudian slip. Ha.
It can't die out, my sprouts are on, and I bought some mince pies on Thursday.
Corby I think 90% of people already do not know what Christmas is about!
If you asked they would say it was about Father Christmas ,presents , food and parties not a celebration of the birth of Christ !
Lol, must have been a Freudian slip.
I really hope it doesn't, I just love the ever so slightly vulgar commercialism of it all.
Brilliant answer Marval ... made me chuckle!!!
What a load of bloody twaddle. You would expect this from the DM but not a serious paper like the Torygraph.

Best ignored if you ask me !
One can only hope so.
Ah Mikey, glad you've arrived, it's good to get a true Lefties viewpoint on these things.
Perhaps we'll just transform it into EU Break.
I don't think Christmas will die out as a celebration and festival but it might as a word.
I think over time we will just start calling it the 'holidays' like the Americans as that's what Christmas is now becoming, just a holiday as the religious meaning of Christmas really only appeals to devout Christians.

I blame Simon Cowell for killing Christmas as bands & singers no longer release Christmas singles to battle for the number one spot which was part of the annual tradition. Hate the X craptor.
Perhaps we'll revert to celebrating pagan midwinter, which was here long before Christ. Linking Christmas to child rape seems remarkably silly, almost as if Christmas isn't really the thing on her mind at all.
Motley.....I made the comment I did not because I am a "leftie" but because the Torygraphs article is complete drivel.

By the way, I have many American friends and they all call it Christmas, not "holidays"
The only place that does not call it Christmas that I know of is Saudi Arabia .
Yes they celebrate it there!, but it is called 'international holiday'. They have a 2 day holiday on 25th / 26th December.
Ah! Louise Casey who was the speaker at an event I attended as she was the Labour Government's 'Respect' tsar.

I'll say no more...
Not if M&S (once Jewish) have their way, they have Christmas cards and paper on sale already here in Truro....
and you can hear Christmas carols in the restaurants there, Eddie!
No form of 'entertainment' which includes music is allowed in any public place restaurants included.
They do sell 'Holiday' cards though they are just like Christmas cards but no religious theme. They have 'holiday trees' and a bearded fat man in a red suit on them as well as lots of snow!
Never ever!! ... Have a bit of this ..
