When I look back to my childhood in the late 40s & 50s, my father was dominant to my mother to the edge of cruelty, which I sometimes still get bad flashbacks about.

It seemed then, it was always a Man's world, and the women's job was to cook, clean, look after the kids, and wait for his Highness to come home from the pub.
youngmafbog //Seriously though, this is their land so should we be interfering? I think not.//

Unfortunately we are still welcoming these misogynists into the civilised world where they continue to promote their disgusting ways.
Well, Quizmonster, if the Muslim calendar is currently in the 15th century, then surely they should not being embracing 21st century ways.
Technology, medicine, education, travel. The list is endless.

How awful it would be if they couldn’t update their Facebook page - “just been out and clubbed my evening meal to death. LOL”!
Best not rape me in my broken down car with 4 alsations towing the boar in a rice trailer.
As my great grandmother said to my great grandfather, my grandmother told my grandfather, my mother to my dad, and I to my partner of over 15 years - 'If you ever raise a hand to me, there will be no questions asked, nor conversations to be had. I will be gone from your life forever'.
It still stands.
(and vice versa, I should add - If I were to ever raise my hand to him the rules would be exactly the same. That would be the end and no argument about it).
Bigbad, do you seriously suppose that, if someone had come up with a 'miraculous' cure for the bubonic plague, people in the 15th century would have failed to take advantage of it?
I'm not suggesting that Muslim women just have to put up with ill treatment...far from it; I'm simply pointing out that, historically and therefore socially, Islam is lagging behind the western world in many respects and there's no way we're going to be able to do anything about it!
Have to say I agree with you, trt,. although in my father's case it was the Golfclub, not the pub, and he didn't drink. Led my mother a cruel life though :(

In this country we can and should be doing something about it.
Good luck with that, Talbot!
No Quizmonster. I don’t.
The point is these people want to live with their 15th century ideology whilst embracing a further 6 centuries of progress.
Still, if it means a man can “discipline” his wife to the point that she needs medical attention, I guess they can have the best of both worlds.
They only lag behind the Western world when it suits them.
I'm not disagreeing with you, Bigbad, I'm simply pointing out that there is very little chance that a group of 'foreigners'...us...will have any great impact on a society whose socio-religious practices have already lasted well over a millennium. Abhor these practices as we may, they are theirs.

Thirty years ago, I was at a Middle Eastern university where I - a man - had the rare privilege of teaching the girls. They were so intelligent, lively and outgoing that I was convinced THEY and their sisters elsewhere would be the saving of Islamic society. However, that particular generation of women appear to have achieved little in the way of improving their lot worldwide.

One day, they will come good...insh'allah!
insh'allah - If Allah wills it.
Not much chance of that happening, then!
Well, if one believes in Allah...Islamic women do, I don't...we have no way of knowing one way or the other whether there's any chance of something happening or not. That's the whole point of the saying, 'insh'allah'. It doesn't mean if YOU want it to happen; it means if GOD wants it to happen. It seems He/She/It doesn't quite want what you want just yet!
Consequently, I'll leave you with the same message I left for Talbot, "Good luck with your wishes coming true."
It's not me that needs the luck, QP.

even QI - is Stephen Fry an ABer? gness would be delighted.
(How about QED?) Seriously, though, if what you want, Talbot and Bigbad, comes to pass, that'll be doubly "lucky". Lucky for you two that your wish has come true and lucky for the Muslim women who will no longer be subject to mistreatment. Breath-holding would be ill-advised, however.
It is easy for us to point and laugh at practices from other cultures, but as QM points out, they are theirs, not ours.

An obsence number (i.e. any number at all!) of service personal have been killed and maimed because the West cannot stop poking its nose into other cultures, and attempting to enforce its cultural practices on other cultures who neither request, desire, or appreciate our desires to make them behave 'properly' - i.e. like us.

This section is full on a daily basis of AB'ers howling from the rooftops about the 'Islamisation' of our country, but seem far less concerned about our county's 'Westernisation' of Muslim countries using invasion and military force.

Are we being just a tad hypocritical in assuming that our way is the right way and the only way, and everyone else must live as we do?
