In this case the security guards were only doing their job, why did this person need to make such a fuss.

/// A spokesman for Tesco said shoppers could take baskets to their cars, as long as they were brought back to the store. ///

Oh yes, and how many would? some can't even bother to wheel the shopping trolleys back where they are stored.

But it appears she managed to get a £10 voucher out of it along with press coverage, the only saving grace is that the security guards also happened to be black, else it could have been even more serious.

/// I am not trying to ‘dictate’ anything on which you post, you really need to stop looking for conflict where none exists. ///

Then please stop the criticisms and unhand snide remarks, whenever I happen to post a thread that happens to contain elements of ethnicity.

Due to the recent news stories on mass migration etc etc, one would find it very difficult not to include ethnicity in their threads.

Take this thread for example, it is now at 115 replies as I type, I could not help it that the female shopper and her friend happened to be black or indeed the two security personnel who also happened to be black, not to mention the shopper who was accosted at ASDA also Black.

/// I have repeatedly asked you to do me the courtesy of using my User Name as I use yours, and not to demean me with the use of my surname, to which I object. ///

Your username is different from mine due to yours being your actual name, so why do you find it disrespectful to use your surname only? It is not breaking site-rules, in fact I could complain that a certain ABer always prints my username in upper-case letters, now that is against Site Rules, since it is deemed shouting.

/// If you continue to be so disrespectful, I shall report each sighting of it.
That is not an ‘attack’, or a ‘threat’ – merely advance warning. ///

Oh a warning is it, and a threat also, who cares, if you demand respect then it is only fair that you must also show it to others.

'in fact I could complain that a certain ABer always prints my username in upper-case letters, now that is against Site Rules, since it is deemed shouting.'

If you are referring to me, I use capitals for everyone's name so I am not singling you out.

I have a reason for doing so but as always, if you are offended by it, report me.

You'd be the big man to do that eh?

/// However I prefer (usually) to use a polite tone and form of addressing people - so which is it to be 'Git' or 'Goat'? ///

Git is not my surname and Goat is not part of my username, but feel free if you also want me to call you a similar type of name?
Unfortunately on this site the use of capitals is the only way to emphasise a word. I know there is a roundabout way of creating italics but it is not very reliable. The facilities for bold or underlined typeface are not available here.
Didn't say that, did I? Let me rephrase it in more acceptable, metrosexual terms.(so it doesn't get removed) She needs a serious attitude adjustment.

I never said you were, just pointing out that the use of capital letters is deemed shouting and against Site Rules.

I am not so petty as to go running to the headmaster on every occasion.

Theo it is then.

(the world must be in a good place if shopping basket based threads attract this much of a response)
I shall also drop the usual address of AOG then , didn't realise the capitals were an irritant and stick to 'anotheroldgit'.

I too have a valid reason for taking the short cut but as they say - that's my problem.

Many people call me many things on here, I respond to most.

/// Unfortunately on this site the use of capitals is the only way to emphasise a word. ///

Can't disagree with you on that, in fact I have done so myself at times.

But there is no need to empathise a person's username, it is just shouting.
I suppose it depends whether or not it's abbreviated. JACKDAW might be considered shouting but not JD.
Perfect example of how my problem manifests itself - 'anotheoldgit'.

Sorry.
o pleez can we get off name calling
and get back to people stealing wire baskets ?
Certainly, shops should have a clear policy on whether baskets can be taken to cars and make sure it is known to all - customers and staff alike.
In Lidl's you put the shopping back in the basket and use a shelf to transfer your goods to your bag. Wander too close to the door with it, like I did, and an alarm goes off.
I've never seen anyone carrying a basket out of a supermarket. Obviously, from the links, people have. (perhaps in protest at paying the 5p)
JJ said you don't pay in takeaways. We do here. (Wales)
Mikey.
The English are not mean. Yes, 5p is a small amount to pay, but we in England are fed up with the government finding new ways to screw money out of us.
We pay £8.20 for prescriptions, per medicine. You in Wales and Scotland pay nothing, because you are subsidised by us. We're not whinging, we're fed up with it all.
With apologies to Peter, who has got the thread back on track

i) Typing whole posts or whole sentences is considered shouting. It's bad on the eyes and it dates back to at least the 90s. Perhaps the internet was a bit nerdy and middle-class at the time?

There is still a need to put acronyms in caps, so that they don't get mistaken for terrible typos and shortening anotheoldgit to AOG just seemed as natural to me as abbreviating Jackdaw33 to JD.

ii) aog didn't specify the ABer he referred to, so I assumed he meant me. See what I mean about un-aimed complaints?

iii)
*emphasis*
-emphasis-
_emphasis_
emphasis (but only one stretch of italic allowed per post)
|emphasis|
and so on. Just avoid using the greater-than and less-than symbols around certain words. I lost a large chunk of a long post last time I tried that.

iv) (aog)
//I am not so petty as to go running to the headmaster on every occasion.//

Calling somebody by their surname, without prefixing it with "Mister" is very headmasterly. Well, 1970s headmasterly.
