a very high turnout has been reported, and a landslide "yes" is being forecast in the urban areas. indeed some prominent "no" campaigners are ready to concede.

but would that necessarily guarantee an overall result in favour of gay marriage?

and, if the result isn't a "yes", will the government embark on its previously successful "neverendum" tactic until the electorate provides the right answer?

OH...OK ! Irony is sometimes difficult to do on a keyboard, as I have found to my cost in the past.

But everybody seems to be happy about this, so I guess we are all united !

Or are we ?
sp, craggy island is very small and most Irish don't live on it.
Gness, I'll fax you a glass of guinness ..so I will.
Oh please do, Father Ted.....that first pint in Dublin is always the best....

And to think when I was born, only 25 years ago, it was illegal to be gay in Ireland.

This gives me hope, it really does.
To be sure, it has never been illegal to be gay in Ireland.
1993

homosexuality decriminalised in Ireland.
to the government and church, it's probably going to be a bummer of a result.
Talbot, homosexuality wasn't illegal, homosexual acts were illegal.

no talbot. the 1993 act decriminalised acts of male to male sex, not homosexuality itself. it's never been illegal to be gay but it was, until 1993, illegal to manifest that as a physical act.
Well, thats that settled then !

Be careful which street you dance in. There's a lot of muggings in the wonderful new Ireland.
'manifest that as a physical act.'
That's probably as near to contemplating the reality of the matter as we need to go... :-)
Given Irish has no words for Yes or No then such referenda are potentially problematic :-)
Thank you pedants.
Right. So you could be gay, but you couldn't have sex with anyone.

Sounds a lot like criminalisation to me.

If, say, our parliament did something monumentally stupid and somehow managed to pass a law banning heterosexual sex between consenting adults, would you feel as though you were being criminalised or not?
Kromo, nobody was gay then..
Why was the law introduced in the first place then?
