It appears the answer from the Asian community is no.

This is quite appalling what they do to people, yet we have apologists on here continually telling us we should respect their ways.

all immigrants of Arabian background should immediately take up binge drinking, so as to fit in. They can't be truly British till they spend Friday night face down in the gutter.

As for homophobia, that has strong British roots too

I recently watched a programme on rent boys in Pakistan so it's not like some Asian men have a problem with gay sex.
If immigrating then yes, pretty much they should. They are being invited as guests and then as new members of a nation/community, and should, as part of accepting that offer, also accept the community should not change to their familiar customs but they are adopting those of the country they wish to be part of. It does not mean they have to indulge in all the worst practices or can not have views of their own, but it is implicit in becoming a citizen of a new country that you accept it as is.

The link given relates to one issue only. In that particular case this community is already accepting there is no consensus, but at the same time there has been a shift towards tolerance and understanding over the last 50 years, and so extremes resulting in ostracization or violence, or similar are not to be tolerated. If an immigrant can not accept this then the UK is not the place they should be immigrating to.

Re. jno's link
I would think the singing was responsible, no-one should have to put up with that after a night out!
On Sky TV this morning, I watched an interview with a gay Asian man, when the interviewer suggested that perhaps the police should get more involved, the Asian drew back from this suggestion.

If they have no confidence in our police what chance do they have?
Do. They should seek employment.

The problem is that new arrivals to the UK cannot simply drop every cultural influence at Heathrow.

It's pretty horrific what young Asian gay men and women have to endure, and because (obviously) they have to keep their sexuality a secret, very little can be done by the wider community to support them.

It's made doubly difficult when some (on the pretext of 'caring' for young gay Asians) use their plight for their own racial agendas.
Yes generally you should not go to another country without trying to blend in with the indiginous population. If the origin is so wonderful stay there do not try and turn your adopted country into your abandonned one.

Too ***; right they should! I don't mind Boris, he plays up to the part of the lovable buffoon at times, he's wide of the mark with some views, spot on with others.
This one I concur with:

But he said people who came to live in the UK needed to speak English and respect British culture and society.

"People need to be British and they need to speak English. They need to be loyal this culture, to this country, to our institutions, to our society, to the Queen, to the rule of law, all the things that make us British

Can't argue with that, to be fair.

Sorry, what did you mean by that?

And it's not just dropping al at Heath row, these attitudes are being passed down generations in this country so British people are the perpetrators.

jno, how can you possible compare gay bashing (and I am not condoning that at all) with what these peoples own family do to them. Unless you are on your usual anti British rant again.

By the way - no-one on AB has ever said that we should 'respect their ways' when it comes to the mistreatment of gay people.

I believe that what you are referring to is respecting specific traditions - I for one have no problem with Asians celebrating the Festival of Light, or fasting during Ramadan or praying in mosques or having three day weddings. Not a problem.

But you are conflating two completely separate issues to make a point. It's undertandable - but not valid.

You can accept cultural differences without accepting ALL cultural differences.

What I mean is that some people couldn't give a rat's behind about the plight of gay Asians. They pretend to, but unless they actively get involved in support groups (as I do), there will always be the suspicion (in my mind at least) that they are cynically using the issue to further their own agendas.

Of course, I may be wrong.

(But of course, I'm really, really not.

ok, I see your point.

I really was simply astonished at the treatment from their own families and that it goes on in the UK. I find that totally unacceptable. Of course I have no problem with weddings and festivals.

Also, the other problem is religion.

The Anglican Church holds less sway over the way that we think. Church attendance is dwindling and as we become a more secular society, open acceptance of gay people increases.

However, in societies where the Church (mosque or synogogue) is still very important, so the persecution of gay people will continue.

If you look at how gay people are treated in the Middle East, the Bible Belt and Russia

...Middle East, the Bible Belt, Africa and Russia, you will see a correlation between persecution and the strength of the associated church.

I couldnt agree more SP.

Religion is the root of much evil unfortunately.
There is no hard and fast rule here.

Obviously it helps if immigrants can speak English - it makes their lives a lot easier, and helps them to settle in and make friends.

But that is not the same as saying they should speak English and nothing else, and start eating fish and chips (or chiken tikka masala!!!) for every meal.

My mother-in-law is Irish and has lived here since 1952, but she still enjoys listening to Irish radio to hear people speak as she does - and no-one would deny her that.
'Obviously it helps if immigrants can speak English'

and if they can't they should be made to learn it to a certain standard
joeluke

But hopefully, not to the same standards as those I've recently watched on 'Benefits Britain' and 'Skint'.
"...people who came to live in the UK needed to speak English and respect British culture and society".
I was born and live here and I don't "respect British culture and society" - I don't disrespect it either (not all of it anyway).

"People need to be British and they need to speak English. They need to be loyal this culture, to this country, to our institutions, to our society, to the Queen, to the rule of law, all the things that make us British".

Can't argue with that, to be fair.

...Oh yes I can TO BE FAIR:

What a load of Jingoistic, imperialist TRIPE (and onions) just the sort of *** I'd expect from that clumsy blond-haired prat.

Tell me something ChillDoubt - how shaven is your head?
