... why does the sheer number of racists/homophobes/whatever in UKIP simply not bother people?

The usual response is that "all parties have bad eggs that we don't hear about." But

a) UKIP are significantly worse offenders

b) UKIP do not seem to care about their unsavoury members. Every time there's a platitude about how the problem will be solved, or how the party is taking quick and effective action - but then it transpires that the person has been behaving in such a way for a very long time, and earned no response.

Why do the same empty excuses always prove so effective? Does this really not bother people? Is nobody concerned that they may have just elected one of UKIP's legion of bad eggs to public office?

I think you are still missing the point. I'm reminded of all these people who, on expressing their views and getting criticised, throw out the "I'm entitled to my opinion" defence. Well yes, they are, and no-one ever disputed that. But then I am equally entitled to mine, an opinion which sees yours as backward or bigoted or whatever, and there is no reason why I...

Well said NJ (as usual).
I'd hazard a guess that what NJ just wrote there is pretty much the stance of 90% of those who voted UKIP.
Sadly(for them), the odd fruitcake/swivel eyed loon was stupidly projected as the standard UKIP voter by the other parties.
They've found otherwise to their cost.

/// And yet...and yet...they can't seem to stop themselves from talking about it. ///

Isn't it gays themselves who can't stop themselves from taking about it, I am sure it doesn't cross heterosexuals minds unless the subject is once again brought to their attention?

New Judge - thanks for your honesty, I appreciate it.

How you can say that UKIP is not a party containing a number of misogynists and racists
Question Author
aurgh! writing on a phone sorry.

How you can say that UKIP is not a party with several misogynists and racists does confuse me. I would be self-evident....

I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THE EVIDENCE WAS SELF EVIDENT.

For christ's sake. Bloody phone.

Yes, I was just referring to the last bit of your post wasn't I ......
In my experience, AOG, it's often those with radical views that are only too happy to bring them into conversation at every possible opportunity. My all-time favourite examples of this are in two conversations. Firstly, I was showing a relative of mine about King's College Chapel. He's a bit of a conspiracy theorist, but anyway, there was this exchange at one point:

Me: "Quite a few famous people have been to this college. Also, David Laws was here."
Dad: "Who?"
Me: "You know, David Laws, the former Treasury Minister."
Weird Relative: "Of course, he never had any real power, he was just working for his puppet masters."

I kid you not. He actually said that. pretty much word-for-word.

Another time, on greeting my former Director of Studies:

Me: "Oh hi, nice flowers you got there."
Him: "Yes, they're for my mother, it's her 98th birthday."
Me: "OH, wow, soon be expecting a telegram, I suppose?"
Him: "Well, given her republican views she won't be too pleased about that..."
Me: "..."

Actually a third exchange I remember. Had just met up with my godmother and her husband, and we'd gone to a pub. He's a vegetarian. I ordered some chicken. His opening sentence to me was: "So tell me, James, how can you eat chicken when you had three chickens of your own that all died horribly last Summer?"

sp. Considering homosexuals have more rights in this country than most black countries, where it is still illegal or as in Jamaica carries a 10 year prison sentence. some countries the death sentence, please stop harping upon those who wish you no harm but have a difference of opinion to you and consider it unacceptable.

Evertime I read something like that I think of...

"These days, if you say you're English..."
to be honest Roy both the Tories and labour ain't worth a toss imo but their the ones who always get in!
I voted UKIP, the local tory bloke lost his seat , still I don't suppose he is bothered, he made a bit on the land he sold to developers.
Brenden

To summarise, are you saying that I should not have the right to disagree with those who do not share my views?

That those who disagree with equal treatment for gay people should be free to voice those opinions, but those who disagree with them should not have any right of reply?

Or are you saying, "Be grateful you don't live in Jamaica, the Middle East or Russia, because you could be locked up or killed there".

If so, perhaps it may be because people in this country are free to challenge bigotry and hatred - are you asking for this freedom to be curtailed so that only anti-gay sentiments are allowed to be expressed?
sp, //Would it be fair to say then, that the only reason to vote for UKIP is for their policies on the EU and immigration?... can we assume that UKIP voters, in their heart of hearts, really don't want the party to be elected - y'know...to be in charge of education, the environment agency, the treasury, health and social security etc?. //

I’m not entirely sure what you’re trying to get at here - and I've indicated that I don't believe they would do so well in a General Election. I’ve already told you why I think people voted for Ukip. Why do you think they voted for them?
naomi24

I was responding to this point that you raised:

"The electorate are concerned about uncontrolled immigration and our place in the EU – and that’s what the vote reflected. Nothing else."

If UKIP voters are concerned with nothing else but immigration and the EU, it leaves them with a very thin platform with which to enter the next GE.
naomi24

Scratch that...I've just realised what you meant by 'Nothing else'!

You were't saying that UKIP supporters aren't interested in anything but the EU and immigration - you're saying that the only reason why UKIP polled so well is because of the EU and immigration...is that right?

If so, then I accept your point.
