My own viewpoint on nuclear power is that it is the only sustainable method of producing large amount of electricity for the future. I know its not a universally held view but I have been a fan since I was a teenager in the 60's. I remember going on a school science trip to a nuclear power station near us in Somerset. It was all so new and exciting. Not sure why the...

Yes, and these days they work perfectly well.

So, apart from you trying to score a political point what is your objection?

The coalition are forced into a corner due to New labour pontificating and not providing the platform for our Nations needs for the future (no surprise there I suppose). We are now in a very real position of having our lights go out in the future unless something is done very quickly.
Ymb,
The last Nuclear Power station was commissioned in 1987. Yes, Labour didn't commission any new ones, but don't forget the 10 years of Thatcher/Major pontificating before them or the 3 years of the Conservative led Coalition pontificating since.

Your attempts to blame Labour for everything get more amusing everyday. Especially in this instance when the facts are well known
if would have been the French, EDF as far as i remember, not sure why they pulled out. Made in China doesn't mean necessarily a bad deal, seeing as how they build their own Nuclear Power plants,
this in fact a deal with EDF and Chinese involvement, haven't looked at the date of the piece, it does say three days ago, however it could be old, will read through it properly in few minutes.

I don't understand who/what you are bashing here. Are you saying that the Chinese should not have Nuclear power? I don't see the connection between Nuclear power and the puchasing of chinese goods. Perhaps someone can decrypt this rather baffling post for me.
Another instance of Privatisation not working.

The Government owned British Nuclear power stations were privatised in 1996 and were supposed to provide the capital to invest in new power stations. They didn't. It is a bit rum privatising an industry and then blaming the Labour Government for not intervening. Did you want them to de-privatise it?

Bit of a blow for capitalism too, having to go cap in hand to Communist China to get our plants built. Of course, that means the any profits these plants eventually make will go to paying back China.

It is clear where the next half of the century is headed. Especially when the US debt ceiling collapses upon them.
EDF are a French company, non? so it's hand in hand with China, what is the big deal about that,
Emmie,
The Chinese aren't going to build them. They are going to loan us the money to build them. They will have to be paid back along with a huge profit on the interest they will charge.
from the BBC

The Chancellor, George Osborne, has announced that the UK will allow Chinese companies to take a stake in British nuclear power plants.

The decision could lead to China taking a future majority stake in the development of the next generation of British nuclear power.

Mr Osborne made the announcement on the last day of a trade visit to China.

The first China deal could be as early as next week, with the go ahead for a new £14bn plant at the Hinkley C site.

Also on Thursday, a report commissioned for the prime minister warned of a growing risk of power shortages over the next few years.

The Royal Academy of Engineering said the closure of older power plants and the slow progress in building news ones was likely to stretch the system "close to its limits".

Being built by EDF

Supply is expected to come under strain in the winter of 2014-15.
Big stake
i am already aware of that as i have already stated, in various links i have posted. so what if they give us the money, have a stake in our nuclear energy programme, it's about time they stopped fannying about with idiot wind farms, unproductive nonsensical ugly eyesores and got down to business. Anne Robinson was interviewing a woman from one of the energy companies last evening on watchdog, asked about price hikes the woman would not comment, however when asked if there could be blackouts, energy shortages this coming winter, she said it's possible.
The big deal about that Emmie, is that we will be paying Communist China back for decades from our electricity bills.

It also means we are no longer in charge of our future energy needs. That is decided by a French firm and Chinese investors.

Still, a few people made a quick buck in 1996 and we sold the family silver to our foreign rivals, so that's OK then.
Emmie,
// it's about time they stopped fannying about with idiot wind farms, unproductive nonsensical ugly eyesores //

The alternative, Nuclear Power Stations are not exactly monuments of beauty.
our family silver as you call it was sold long ago, pretty much like Gordon Brown selling our gold reserves off at rock bottom prices, don't kid yourself that this is a bad deal, not to mention that what British company can build nuclear plants, if there are ones that could, why hasn't it happened, is it because the problems inherent in building the plants, opposition to them by green energy lobby groups, and a fear of nuclear fallout, like the one in Japan. As one link say it's been a hot political potato for years, if Osborne, the coalition or whoever in the current administration has struck a deal it's about time. This should have been done years ago. stable door and horse bolting comes to mind.
Gromit, regardless of what Thatcher did the Brown/Blair dynasty was from 1997 to 2010 (13 years). They, and they alone are responsible for today's predicament. The Tories were not in power and could not do anything about it.

What amazes me is how you still try to deflect everything to Thatcher - despite the fact she left power in 1990, dome 23 years ago!

The last nuclear plant was put in place by the Tories.

As you say the facts are well nkown.
Gromit, come on, wind farms will ruin far more acres of land than any Nuclear plant.
The sensible thing is to have an energy mix not put all our eggs into Nuclear or Gas generated electricity. Coal, wind, solar, hydro and tidal have a part to play in that.
no they are not, however they don't take up quite so much space, they don't spread right across green belt land, once protected areas, i think that it's time the coalition grew a pair and got this sorted, if they have struck a deal then good.
they are not putting all the eggs in one basket, but the idiocy of these last few years of being badgered, battered into accepting heavily subsidised wind farms has been a blot on many peoples lives. Have a look at how big some of these wind farms are, its grotesque. Better a firm nuclear programme that sitting on your arse waiting for the lights to go out. It happened before and it could well happen again.
I think ones country being owned by a multitude of foreign nations, is not a good thing regardless who has bought you.
