I was minding my own business at 40 mph and the cluster bleeped
all the lights came on and all the dial went round to max then everything
went off for a second. Then it all came back on again. The engine didn't stop or
anything but all the counters reset.

Has anyone had this - is it a 'one of those things' or a prelude to an expensive day !
Since this is a 04 it 's got to a point where the petrol in the tank is worth more than the car so it might be it's death knell

I’ve heard of others who have experience this on modern cars.

I would assume it just to be an electronic glitch within the car’s computer.
Mondeo’s (in particular) have a limp-home mode – I would take it as a good sign that it did not enter this mode.

The car is only worth a few hundred pounds, so you really haven’t lost much if it all goes *** up.
Most likely it did a self test for some reason ( some glitch or other ).
I wouldn't worry about it especially a car of that age.
